"Myra?"
I heard his voice calling me from the living room.
"Myra!" he called again.
I stayed hidden behind the door of my room, shivering.
He was closer now.
He was going to find me!
I stayed in bed, silent, when he opened the door of my room.
He looked around and saw me.
He thought I was sleeping.
He came closer and kissed my forehead.
"Good morning, sweetheart," he whispered.
Then he went to the closet to get some clothes.
I stayed still, pretending to sleep, until he left the room.
I breathed deeply.
What am I going to do?
We had been dating for a month.
We met through a dating app.
He lived in Los Angeles.
I liked him a lot and thought I could spend the rest of my life with him.
That was why I agreed to go and live with him.
But now, I was having second thoughts.
I couldn't tell him how I felt.
I couldn't tell him I was scared of being tied down.
So I decided not to show up at the airport as we had planned and didn't pick up his calls.
The Billionaire's Obsession
He called me again.
I looked at the screen of my phone.
I could hear him moving around downstairs, making breakfast.
He would come upstairs soon to check on me.
I got out of bed and walked to the closet.
I opened it and got only the things I needed.
Some clothes, some toiletries, and the money I had saved in an envelope for emergencies.
The smell of pancakes wafted through the door and into my room.
I put everything in my old duffel bag.
My hands were shaking while typing a message to Tina, asking if I could crash at her place in New York for a while.
The Billionaire's Obsession
She was a friend from high school who was now living in New York City.
I went to the window and looked down at the street.
No one was there.
I checked the hallway before going downstairs.
I heard Jerry humming in the kitchen downstairs and the clinking of plates on the counter as he set the table for breakfast.
The Billionaire's Obsession
I went back into my room and stuffed the phone charger and toiletries into the duffel bag.
My hands were shaking as I zipped it shut.
I could hear Jerry's footsteps coming from the kitchen, carrying a plate of pancakes up the stairs.
The sizzling of bacon was still coming from the kitchen, filling the house with a delicious smell that made my stomach turn with guilt.
I scribbled a note on a piece of paper.
"I'm sorry, I can't do this."
Then I walked to the back staircase.
I went down quietly, skipping the third step so it wouldn't creak.
When I got to the bottom, I could hear Jerry whistling in the kitchen while he cooked.
My Uber notification buzzed silently in my pocket.
The Billionaire's Obsession
The driver was two minutes away.
"Myra, is everything okay?" Jerry's voice startled me as he appeared at the top of the stairs.
I froze, clutching the duffel bag tighter.
"Jerry, I... I need to leave," I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
