I heard them get closer to my box.
Their footsteps crunch in the fresh snow outside my box.
One of the kids asked why I was sleeping here.
A woman hushed him.
They stood there hovering over me, talking in whispers.
My fingers twitched against the thin blanket I had found to keep me warm but I kept still.
Maybe they would leave food or money like some people did sometimes.
The cold seeped through my mattress as I waited.
One of them said something about calling the police.
I stayed motionless, my heart pounding in my chest.
They stood there for a few more minutes, crunching in the snow that was falling around them.
The little kid asked why someone would sleep outside in the snow.
The mother hushed him again and then she stepped closer to my box.
Her shadow fell across my face through a gap in the cardboard.
My blonde hair spilled out from under my blanket.
I heard her lean down to look at me.
The snow blew into my shelter as she pulled out her phone and shone the light on me.

She gasped and dropped her phone.
