I was an orphan, a poor one even.
I had been in foster care and had been transferred from one home to another until I was finally adopted at the age of ten.
My new adoptive parents, however, did not last long.
They kicked me out when I turned seventeen, stating that they could no longer afford to keep me.
It didn't come as a shock to me since I had always known that I was just a temporary fixture in their lives.
After all, they had made it clear to me from the start that they expected me to earn my keep and pay my own fees once I turned sixteen and joined high school.
But I guess they thought that since I was still in school, the government would continue to provide for my upkeep.
But such was not the case, and once I turned seventeen and dropped out of school, they could no longer afford to keep me.
So they kicked me out.
It was okay, though.
I had long gotten used to being on my own and fending for myself.
I stayed on the streets for a while until I found a job at a local restaurant as a dishwasher.
The pay was not great, but it was enough to get me a small studio apartment.
The Billionaire Reborn
I'm scrubbing dishes at Tony's when my phone buzzes.
I glance at the screen, and Penelope's name flashes.
I dry my hands and step out into the alley behind the kitchen.
I already know what's coming.
"Hey," I say, my voice tight.
"Hi," she says, her voice cold and rehearsed.
"I need to talk to you about something."
"Okay," I say, bracing myself.
"I met someone," she says, her words hitting me like a punch to the gut.
"His name is Marcus. He's a banker. He drives a Mercedes."
The Billionaire Reborn
She pauses, letting the words sink in.
"He can give me things you can't."
I grip the phone tighter, feeling anger and hurt rising up inside me.
"What are you saying?"
"I need financial stability," she says, her voice devoid of emotion.
"A real future. You can't give me that."
I want to argue with her, but I know it's no use.
Two years together, and it comes down to this.
"You're just going to throw everything away for some rich guy?"
"It's not just about the money," she says, her voice cold and detached.
"It's about security. A future. You can't give me that." I feel like I've been punched in the gut.
All our plans, all our dreams, gone in an instant.
"We were saving up for an apartment," I remind her, my voice shaking with anger and hurt.
"We were supposed to start a life together."
"That was just a fantasy," she says, her voice dripping with disdain.
"This is reality."
The back door creaks open, and my manager pokes his head out.
"Hey, you okay?" he asks, eyeing me curiously.
"Yeah," I say, nodding quickly.
"Just give me a minute."
He nods and disappears back inside.
I turn my attention back to Penelope.
"So that's it?" I ask, my voice shaking with anger and hurt.
"That's it," she says, her voice cold and detached.
"I'm sorry."
The Billionaire Reborn
"Don't be sorry," I say, my voice bitter.
"Just go."
After my shift ends at midnight, I trudge back to my apartment.
The bus is quiet, and I stare out the window as the city passes by in a blur.
I unlock my door and step inside, the familiar smell of stale air and worn carpets filling my nostrils.
The studio is small, with a single bed in one corner and a tiny kitchenette in the other.
The walls are a drab gray, and the carpet is stained and faded.
It's not much, but it's all I can afford right now.
I drop my keys on the counter and start pulling clothes from the closet, stuffing them into an old duffel bag.
I can't bear to stay here anymore.
Every corner of this cramped space holds memories of Penelope's visits, of her laughter and our late-night conversations.
I remember how she would sit on the edge of the bed, her eyes scanning the room with a mix of pity and disdain.
The Billionaire Reborn
"This is just temporary," she would say, patting my hand reassuringly.
"We'll get something better soon."
But that never happened. I grab my work uniform from the hook on the wall and shove it into the bag, along with a few pairs of jeans and some worn-out T-shirts.
I rummage through my dresser drawer for any spare cash I might have stashed away, but all I find is a crumpled bus schedule tucked away in a corner.
It's a backup plan I had made months ago, just in case things didn't work out with Penelope.
I smooth out the creases and scan the schedule for the earliest bus to Chicago.
It leaves at 6 AM.
I count my savings - $847.23 - just enough to buy a ticket and scrape by for a few weeks while I look for a job.
I grab my jacket from the hook near the door and stuff it into the bag, then pause for a moment to look around one last time at this dingy apartment that has been my home for so long. It feels surreal to be leaving everything behind like this, but I know it's what I need to do right now.
I grab my phone from the counter and quickly type out a resignation note to Tony, taping it to the apartment door so that he'll see it when he does his morning mail run.
The Billionaire Reborn
As I turn to leave, my phone buzzes again.
"You're really leaving?" It's Tony's voice, more surprised than angry.
"Yeah, Tony. It's time for a fresh start."
I stuff the last of my belongings into the duffel bag and grab the crumpled bus schedule from the dresser.
The station is dimly lit, with only a few late-night travelers scattered across the hard plastic seats.
I approach the ticket counter and purchase a one-way ticket to Chicago, handing over nearly half of my savings.
The terminal is mostly empty, with only a few stragglers waiting for their buses.
A flickering fluorescent light casts harsh shadows on the walls as I wait, checking my phone one last time for any messages from Penelope.
The Billionaire Reborn
There are none.
The bus arrives with a hiss of hydraulics, and the driver loads my single bag into the storage compartment.
The Billionaire Reborn
I settle into the worn fabric seat, my duffel bag tucked securely in the overhead compartment.
The bus's engine rumbles to life, and we pull away from the terminal.
Through the grimy window, I watch the familiar landmarks of my life scroll past - Tony's restaurant with its neon sign, the park where Penelope and I used to walk, the convenience store where I bought cheap dinners for one.
The city lights grow dimmer as we merge onto the highway, other passengers quietly shifting in their seats around me.
