"Look," she says, holding up the screen for me to see.
It's a staff photo from twenty-five years ago.
"That's my mother," I whisper, recognizing her instantly.
Megan nods, lowering the phone. "She was fired under mysterious circumstances, and then she disappeared."
My heart pounds in my chest as I ask, "Do you know why?"
Megan fumbles in her designer purse and pulls out a worn envelope.
The paper is yellowed and crackles as she holds it out to me.
"I found this stuffed in the back of the file," she explains, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I think it's for you."
My mother's neat handwriting covers the front of the envelope: "For my son, Shane."
I snatch the envelope from Megan's grasp before she can change her mind.
It feels fragile in my fingers, like it might disintegrate at any moment.
I start to open it, but Megan grabs my arm.
"Wait," she says, her eyes wide with fear.
"The things she wrote in there... they're disturbing."
She glances over her shoulder at the crowd of onlookers and leans in closer to me.
"There's security footage from that day," she whispers urgently.
"Your mother was escorted out of the building by armed guards. She never came back."
I look down at the envelope, my pulse racing, and decide it's time to uncover the truth.
