I was a little girl when my mom told me the story of how she became rich.
I was so fascinated by her story and since then, I've always dreamed of becoming a rich housewife.
When I grow up, I want to be just like my mom—a successful businesswoman with three beautiful kids and a handsome husband.
I want to live in a big house with all the latest gadgets.
I want to drive a good car and wear expensive clothes.
Most importantly, I want to give my parents a comfortable life.
I want them to be happy knowing that their daughter is living a good life.
I have two little brothers and one little sister.
My brothers are always getting into trouble by starting fires, and my sister is just a baby who loves playing with toys.
We are poor, but my mom never wants us to feel like we are poor.
She always buys us toys and clothes, even though we can't really afford them.
Sometimes, when we don't have enough money for food, she goes hungry so that we can eat.
She is an amazing mom and I want to be just like her when I grow up.
"Mom, can you tell me again how you became rich?"
I asked her as I sat on her lap.
"Sam, you know the story already," she answered as she stroked my hair.
"Tell me again, please. I want to hear it again," I begged her.
She leaned closer to me and shifted me on her lap so that she could make herself comfortable on our couch.
The evening light streamed through the small window of our apartment and cast long shadows across the living room floor where my little brother Preston was playing with his toy cars.
My other brother Noah paused his video game and scooted closer to listen, even though he pretended not to care.
My mom's fingers continued running through my hair as she took a deep breath.
I could smell her drugstore perfume as she adjusted herself one last time.
"Mom, please," I begged her again.
She looked down at me with those tired eyes of hers, but they crinkled at the corners when she smiled.
Her voice dropped to that special storytelling tone she used for important moments.
"Okay, okay," she said.
"Once upon a time..."
And then the doorbell rang.
It echoed through our small apartment, making us all jump.
I slid off my mom's lap and padded barefoot across the thin carpet to the door.
Preston abandoned his cars to race me there, but I got there first.
I peered out through the peephole, but there was no one in the hallway.
I turned around, confused, and that's when I saw it: a cream-colored envelope on our welcome mat.
It had my name written on it in neat handwriting that I didn't recognize.
There was no return address and no stamps.
I picked it up, feeling the thick, expensive paper between my fingers.
