I stood at the door, staring at it like it was a foreign creature.
I had knocked on it already and was waiting for the man to answer the door.
The wind hit my back, making me shiver.
The thunderstorm was getting worse by the minute and I needed to get inside already.
I knocked again, hoping he could hear it over the thunder.
"Come on already," I muttered, tapping my foot on the ground impatiently.
Just as I was about to knock for the third time, the door swung open and a handsome young man stood before me.
His eyes widened slightly as he took in my appearance.
I wasn't surprised; my breasts were huge and comically so, even for my size.
They were usually the first thing people noticed about me, then they looked up to see my face and either liked what they saw or didn't.
I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, anxious to get inside.
The rain pelted my back, soaking through my shirt.
His eyes darted from my face to my chest and back again.
I could see the flicker of the porch light reflecting in his eyes as he stared at me.
He was handsome, with dark hair and a strong jawline.
He was a bit taller than me too, which was nice since I was only 5'2".
The light flickered again, casting shadows across his face as he stood there, holding the door open.
The thunder crashed overhead, making me flinch.
I hated thunderstorms; they always made me nervous.
He gripped the doorframe tightly, his knuckles white as he stood there staring at me.
I wrapped my arms tighter around myself, trying to stop the chill that ran through me as the rain continued to fall on my back. My clothes clung to me uncomfortably and I could feel the water dripping from my hair onto my shirt.
"Um," he said, his mouth opening and then closing again as if he wasn't sure what to say.
I bit my lip nervously and took a small step forward, my shoes squeaking on the wet concrete of the porch.
The wind picked up again, sending another shiver through me and making my teeth chatter slightly.
"You're soaked," he finally said, stepping aside to let me in.
"Thanks," I replied, stepping into the warmth of the house, "I didn't expect the storm to hit so suddenly."
He closed the door behind me and added, "Well, it's not just the storm that's unexpected tonight."
I looked down and saw that I was dripping water onto the entryway floor.
The house was cozy, with family photos lining the walls and the faint scent of cinnamon wafting from the kitchen.
"Let me get you something to dry off with," he said, disappearing down a hallway before I could say anything.
I stood there awkwardly, not wanting to drip any more water onto the floor.
I looked around, taking in my surroundings.
The house was a small ranch with a large backyard.
I could see the outline of a pool through the large windows in the living room.
It was dark now, but I imagined it would be beautiful during the day when the sun was shining.
He returned a minute later with a fluffy blue towel and handed it to me.
Our fingers brushed against each other as I took it from him and he smiled slightly. "I'm Jaxon," he said, his eyes meeting mine for the first time since I had knocked on his door.
"Um," I said, wrapping the towel around my shoulders and holding it there awkwardly.
"I'm Ella."
He stared at me for a second, then said, "You look familiar. Are you related to the Hendersons?"
I froze, the towel pressed against my neck as I stared at him.
The Hendersons - my biological father's family.
How did he know?
"Yes, I am," I replied cautiously, trying to gauge his reaction.
He nodded, a knowing look in his eyes. "I thought so. Your father used to talk about you all the time."
My heart skipped a beat as I asked, "You knew my father?"
I clutched the towel tighter around me as he nodded, his eyes never leaving mine.
He took a step closer to me, making my heart pound in my chest.
The entryway seemed smaller now, more intimate.
Water dripped from my hair onto the hardwood floor as I tried to process what he was saying.
My fingers trembled against the soft fabric of the towel as I stared at him, searching for answers.
He looked sincere, but how could he know my father?
My father had abandoned us years ago and we hadn't heard from him since.
When Jaxon reached out to brush a wet strand of hair from my face, I instinctively stepped back, bumping into the wall behind me.
"Sorry," he said softly, lowering his hand. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"It's just... I never expected to meet someone who knew him," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
Jaxon nodded, his expression turning serious. "There's a lot you don't know about your father, and I think it's time you found out."
