The Tale of Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a young man named Malin Kundang was getting ready to go to sea.
He was going to leave his mother and his girlfriend, Lina Sari, behind.
Lina was sad to see him go.
She had been his friend since they were children and had been in love with him for almost as long.
She knew that he wanted to go out into the world and have adventures, but she was afraid that he would get hurt or that he would forget about her.
Malin promised that he would write to her and that he would come back as soon as he could.
He told her that he loved her and that she was the only girl for him.
Then he said goodbye to his mother and got on the ship with his friend Rama Wijaya.
The two young men were excited about their journey.
They had heard stories of faraway lands and beautiful women, and they couldn’t wait to see them for themselves.
I was ready to set sail in the rain.
The rain was pouring down on the roofs of our modest homes.
I walked towards the ship and a voice called out behind me, “Malin, you are leaving?”
I turned around and saw my mother.
She was wearing a simple dress and holding an umbrella.
I said, “Yes, mother, I am going to leave.”
My mother walked towards me and asked, “Do you have everything you need?”
I looked at my bag and said, “Yes, mother, I have everything I need.”
My mother then opened the umbrella and held it over my head.
She said, “You must be careful.
If anything happens, come home as soon as possible.”
I nodded and said, “Yes, mother, I will be careful.”
My mother was still worried about me, so she said to me, “There is some food in your bag.
When you are hungry, you can eat it.”
I looked at my bag and saw that there was a lunch box in it.
I smiled and said, “Thank you, mother, I’m hungry right now.”
Just then, someone called out behind me again.
I turned around and saw that it was Lina Sari who was carrying a basket of food.
Her eyes were swollen from crying, and she looked sad.
She was my childhood friend and had been in love with me for a long time.
I went to her and asked, “Lina, why are you crying?”
Lina wiped away her tears and said to me with a smile, “I’m not crying.
I’ve just been cutting onions with my mother, that’s why my eyes are swollen.”
I took the basket from her hand and said with a smile, “You are so kind.
What is this food for?”
Lina looked at the food in the basket and said with a smile, “This is for you to eat on the road.”
She then took out a box from the basket and put it in my bag.
She looked at me and said with a smile, “The sea is full of danger and we don’t know if you can come back safe or not, so you must be careful.”
After she finished speaking, she couldn’t help but look sad again.
I took her hand and said to her gently, “Don’t worry, I will come back.”
Lina shook her head gently and said with a sad smile, “You don’t know how dangerous the sea is.
What if you forget about me after you have been to so many places?”
My heart ached when I heard what she said.
I hugged her tightly and said to her gently, “How could I forget about you?
No matter where life takes me, I will always remember you.”
Lina listened to my words and nodded gently.
She wiped away her tears and said with a smile, “Well then, if you forget about me, I’ll go to the sea to find you.”
Seeing that she had stopped crying, I also smiled and said, “Sure thing.
If I forget about you, I will marry a mermaid.”
Lina blushed at my words and pouted angrily.
