I love being a teacher.
I know it sounds corny, but I don’t care; it’s the truth.
I get to spend my day doing fun, exciting things, and I get to share all of that with twenty amazing kids.
My students are the best.
I have the most imaginative, creative, and smart fifth graders in the entire school.
Okay, maybe I’m a little biased, but honestly, they’re just the best.
I think it’s because I make learning fun.
I don’t stick to the book or follow the lesson plan all the time.
I like to keep things fresh and surprising.
Like the time we did a science experiment and made volcanoes erupt in the schoolyard.
Or the day we went on a virtual tour of the world and explored all of the different countries.
My favorite, though, was when we wrote our own stories and then made them into movies.
The kids got to be the actors, directors, and even editors.
They learned so much that day, and they didn’t even realize they were learning.
It was awesome!
I know my colleagues appreciate my enthusiasm and imagination, even if they don’t always appreciate my spontaneity.
The Best Teacher I Ever Had
During lunch break, I was sitting at my desk, eating my sandwich and reading the latest issue of a manga comic.
Tommy came in and sat down at his desk.
He had a notebook out and was doodling.
I glanced over at his work and was amazed.
He was drawing an incredible manga-style comic, with characters and dragons and magic.
"Wow, Tommy," I said, "you’re really talented."
Tommy blushed and smiled.
"Thanks," he said.
Then Sarah walked in, juggling three balls.
She saw me looking at her and smiled.
The Best Teacher I Ever Had
"I’ve been practicing," she said.
I watched her for a few minutes, then an idea popped into my head.
I cleared my throat to get everyone’s attention.
"We’re having a talent show tomorrow," I announced.
The kids all started talking excitedly, asking each other what they were going to do.
I grabbed my marker and went to the whiteboard.
"Okay," I said, "let’s make a list of acts. Who wants to go first?"
Hands shot up all over the room, even Marcus’s hand went up; he was going to do some card tricks. While the kids practiced their acts during recess, I transformed the classroom into a theater.
I pushed all of the desks against the walls and borrowed Helen’s fairy lights from across the hall to create a stage area.
Ben poked his head in to see what I was up to.
"You’re having a talent show?" he asked excitedly.
"Yes," I replied, "tomorrow afternoon."
"Can I be your MC?"
Ben asked hopefully.
"Sure," I said, "you’ll be great."
The Best Teacher I Ever Had
Ben is our drama teacher; he’s very theatrical and loves being on stage, so it was perfect that he would be our master of ceremonies for the talent show.
As I finished setting up the lights, Ben leaned in closer with a conspiratorial whisper.
"Did you hear about the surprise guest?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Surprise guest? Who's coming?"
"Shh, it's a secret," Ben said, winking.
"I'm not supposed to know, but I overheard the principal talking to someone on the phone. Apparently, there's a special visitor coming tomorrow."
My curiosity was piqued.
"Any guesses who it might be?"
I asked.
Ben shook his head.
"No idea, but it sounds important. Maybe it's a celebrity?"
I laughed.
"I doubt it. We're just a small school in the suburbs. I can't imagine a celebrity showing up here."
Ben shrugged.
The Best Teacher I Ever Had
"You never know. Stranger things have happened."
As we continued arranging the chairs and setting up the stage, I couldn't help but wonder who this surprise guest might be.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the day.
As I packed up my things, my phone buzzed with an incoming call.
I glanced at the screen and saw that it was Channel 5 News calling me.
My heart skipped a beat as I answered the call.
"Hello?"
I said, trying to sound calm.
"Hi, is this Ms. Thompson?" asked a woman's voice on the other end of the line.
"Yes, that's me."
"Great! My name is Karen, and I'm a producer for Channel 5 News. We're interested in doing a segment on your class's talent show tomorrow." "Oh, wow! That's amazing!" "We've seen some videos online of your class performing in the past, and we think they're incredible. We'd love to broadcast their talent show live tomorrow afternoon."
My mind raced as I processed what she was saying.
This could be an amazing opportunity for my students, but it also meant a lot of pressure and attention.
I wasn't sure if they were ready for that level of exposure.
"Um, I need to talk to my students and their parents about this," I said hesitantly.
"Of course," Karen replied.
"We completely understand. Can you get back to me by tomorrow morning? We need to make arrangements for our crew to come and set up."
I nodded, even though she couldn't see me through the phone.
"Okay, I'll talk to everyone tonight and let you know by tomorrow morning."
We hung up, and I turned to Ben, who was watching me with curiosity.
"What was that about?" he asked.
"Channel 5 News wants to broadcast our talent show live tomorrow," I explained.
Ben's eyes widened in surprise.
"Wow, that's huge!" Ben exclaimed.
"I know, but I'm worried it might be too much for the kids," I admitted.
The Best Teacher I Ever Had
"Maybe, but think about how exciting it would be for them to see themselves on TV," Ben said with a grin.
