I was fast asleep when my phone rang.
The vibrations on my bed must have woken me up because I wasn’t going to answer it otherwise.
Looking at the screen, I saw it was Emily calling.
Immediately, I sat up and answered.
"Hey, what’s up?"
She was crying.
That was all I needed to know and my body went on high alert.
I stood up and reached for my jeans.
"What happened? Are you okay?"
"D…"
She sniffed.
"I need your help."
I grabbed my shoes.
"What do you need?"
"Can you come to my room? I’ll tell you when you get here."
I didn’t live in the same dorm as her, but it wasn’t far either.
I didn’t mind walking over there in the middle of the night, especially if she needed me.
"Yeah, I’m on my way."
I hung up and quickly got dressed before racing out of my room.
It didn’t take me long to get to her dorm and to her room.
When I got there, I knocked & waited for her to open the door.
When she did, her face was red from crying.
"Hey," she said, stepping back to let me in.
I walked in and closed the door behind me.
She was standing there, eyes puffy and cheeks flushed.
Without thinking, I went over and wrapped my arms around her.
"What’s going on?"
I asked softly.
She shook her head.
"I’m sorry. I didn’t know who else to call."
I pulled back a bit and looked at her.
"What do you need me to do?"
She bit her lip and gestured to her dress.
The zipper was stuck halfway down her back.
"I can’t get it off."
I nodded and walked around behind her.
Looking at the zipper, I could see why she couldn’t get it off.
It was stuck pretty good.
"Emily, this isn't just about the dress, is it?"
She hesitated, then whispered, "No, it's about what I found in my closet."
I paused, my hand on the zipper, and asked, "What did you find?"
She glanced over her shoulder at the closet door.
"It’s a letter from my mom."
I didn’t move, fingers still on the zipper, and looked into her eyes.
"What does it say?"
She took a deep breath and clenched the fabric of her dress in her fists.
"It’s about my dad… things I didn’t know."
I nodded, understanding why she was upset.
Carefully, I freed the zipper and she let out a shaky laugh of relief.
"Thanks, D."
