Being an avid bookworm, I spend most of my free time reading novels.
Whether it's on my way to work or back home from the office, as long as I have a few minutes of spare time, I'll be buried in a book.
I also happen to write reviews for the books I've read and post them online.
Sometimes, I even insert myself into the world of the novel I'm reading and imagine what would happen if I were one of the characters.
It's all just harmless fun.
One day, after finishing up a particularly tedious batch of work at the office, I open up my favorite e-reader app on my tablet and start reading a new novel.
As I'm flipping through the pages, something about the plot catches my eye.
I think to myself, "This is so stupid!
Why would anyone write a story like this?"
But despite thinking that the story is dumb, I find myself unable to put the book down.
Curiosity gets the better of me, and I keep reading until I reach the end of the chapter.
At that point, I let out a sigh of relief and decide to stop for the night since I've finally reached a decent stopping point.
The next morning, while commuting to work on the subway, I pull out my tablet and continue reading where I left off the night before.
As soon as I open up the app, every single book disappears except for the one I was last reading.
"What the hell?"
The Beauty System
I grip my tablet tighter, my fingers trembling against its smooth surface.
The subway car rattles and sways, but the other passengers seem oddly distant, their faces blurred like watercolor paintings.
I clear my throat, trying to catch someone's attention.
A businessman in a crisp suit stands closest to me, his hand wrapped around a metal pole.
"Excuse me," I call out, my voice wavering.
The Beauty System
"Is your phone working?"
He doesn't respond or even glance in my direction.
I reach out to tap his shoulder, but my hand passes right through him as if he were made of air.
The fluorescent lights above flicker, and the subway car stretches impossibly long before my eyes.
Panic rising in my chest, I frantically tap the power button on the tablet.
The screen flickers to black, and I watch as the subway car continues warping around me, its metal walls bending like melting plastic.
My fingers tremble as I hold down the button, counting the seconds until the familiar startup logo appears.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
The Beauty System
The screen remains dark and lifeless.
I try connecting to the subway's WiFi, but the settings menu shows no available networks.
The businessman's newspaper phases through his transparent hands, drifting through his lap and dissolving into the floor.
