I sat on the beach with my friends sipping on beers, the warm sun beating down on us as we laughed and joked about nothing in particular.
We had decided to come to this beach because it was free; we didn’t need to pay to get in and it wasn’t monitored, which meant we were allowed to bring along alcohol.
We sat on our blankets and enjoyed the day for a while until suddenly we all needed to pee at the same time.
Looking around, it quickly became apparent that there were no restrooms or toilets anywhere in sight.
"Why didn’t we think about this before?" Emily wondered aloud.
"We just assumed, didn’t we?"
"I personally just assumed there would be toilets here," Lily admitted.
"Isn’t that what you pay for when you go to a monitored beach?"
"I think this is why we chose a free beach, guys," Jessica reminded us, finishing off the last of her beer.
"Because it’s free."
"Yeah, well, it should at least be a dollar per pee," I chuckled.
"Right? That way it’s still cheaper than a toilet at a mall or something."
"Can we just go in the ocean?" Jessica asked.
"Isn’t that what sea animals do?"
"I don’t think sea animals pee, Jessica,” Lily laughed.
"And even if they do, wouldn’t peeing in the ocean be bad for the environment or something?"
"Couldn’t be worse than some of the shit people dump in there," Emily pointed out.
"True, but still," Lily said.
"I don’t think we should pee in the ocean. I’m sure it’s not good for us either."
"Then what are we going to do?"
I asked.
"We can’t just hold it all day."
"I know, but where are we going to go?"
Emily wondered.
"I don’t see anywhere we can go."
"Maybe if we walk along the shoreline a bit, we’ll find a secluded spot," I suggested.
"Let’s try it," Emily agreed.
We both pulled on our shorts and left the group, scanning the beach as we walked away from them.
The shoreline was rocky and littered with seaweed and shells, but there were no trees or anything to hide behind.
We continued walking until the sun beat down on us so much that we had to stop and take off our shirts to cover our heads.
"I don’t see anywhere," Emily said, squinting into the distance.
"Me neither. Maybe if we walk further?"
We continued walking along the shoreline, stepping over seaweed and shells as we went.
The sand was hot and uncomfortable beneath our feet, but we didn’t have any other choice.
As desperate as we were to pee, we couldn’t just do it right there in the open. We walked for a while longer until finally, Emily stopped and looked around.
"This is ridiculous," she said.
"We’re never going to find anywhere to go."
"I know," I agreed.
"We should have just gone behind an umbrella or something."
"Too late now," Emily said.
"We’ll just have to go back."
We turned around and trudged back along the shoreline until we reached our umbrella again.
I kicked off my sandals and sat down on my towel, my bladder aching from holding it in for so long.
Emily sighed and dropped down beside me.
"Well, that was pointless," she said.
"I guess so," I agreed.
"Now what are we going to do?"
"I don’t know," Emily said, looking around at the other people on the beach who were all staring at us curiously.
The sun beat down on us, and we huddled together, whispering as we tried to come up with a plan.
"We can’t just go back and sit there all day," Jessica said.
"We have to pee."
"I know," Emily said.
"I just don’t know what to do."
"Maybe we can form a human shield?"
Jessica suggested.
"We can stand near the water’s edge and pee. It’ll be like a little wall."
"That might work," Emily said.
"I’m willing to try it."
Lily nodded in agreement.
"I am too. I really need to pee."
"Okay, let’s do it," Jessica said.
We all stood up and began shuffling towards the shoreline, trying to act casual as we went.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I knew the others were feeling the same way.
We reached the water’s edge and stood there for a moment, looking around nervously.
I could feel my bladder pressing against me, begging to be released.
Finally, I couldn’t hold it anymore.
"Wait, guys," Emily whispered urgently.
"What if someone sees us and reports it? We could get fined or something."
Jessica sighed, glancing around. "Then we’ll just have to be quick and hope for the best. It’s either that or explode."
