The following day, I pulled myself together and went to my pastry class.
I could not let anything weigh me down.
I had to move on with my life.
When I got to the pastry class, my friends could not help but notice that something was wrong with me.
"Renee, what is wrong with you? You look different," Jules asked me.
"I am fine," I said.
"You are not fine. What happened?" Helen asked me.
I sighed and did not say anything.
I knew that they would not give up on asking me questions, so I decided to keep quiet.
"Did Reynolds do anything to you?" Natasha asked me.
I shook my head and did not say anything.
I knew that they would keep asking me questions until I told them what happened, but I did not want to tell them anything.
I wanted to keep it all to myself.
"Can you help me with this?"
I asked Zoe.
She nodded and helped me with the pastry.
The four of us were baking our pastries when my phone kept ringing.
I looked at the screen and saw Xander’s name flashing.
He was calling me over and over again.
I did not want to answer his calls, so I kept ignoring them.
"I will help you," Jules said, smiling at me.
"Okay," I said, smiling back at her.
We both worked on the dough, kneading it until it was smooth and elastic.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed making pastry.
It was like a puzzle, trying to figure out how to make the dough come together.
I was so focused on the dough that I did not even notice when my phone stopped ringing.
I looked up and saw Zoe and Helen looking at me with worried expressions.
"What is wrong?"
I asked them.
"Nothing," Zoe said quickly.
"We were just wondering if you wanted to go get some lunch with us."
"Oh," I said, feeling a little disappointed.
"I thought maybe we could go somewhere else. You know, just the four of us."
Helen nodded, and we all agreed to go somewhere else for lunch.
As we walked out of the pastry class, I felt a sense of relief wash over me.
I was glad to be away from the stress of the class and the pressure of making perfect pastry.
I knew that I still had a lot to learn, but for now, I was happy to take a break. "Do you want to go somewhere else?"
Zoe asked me as we walked down the street.
"Yeah," I said, smiling at her.
"I would love to."
We walked in silence for a few minutes before Zoe spoke up again.
"Hey, do you want to come over tonight? We can have dinner together."
"That sounds great," I said, smiling at her.
"Thanks for inviting me."
"No problem," Zoe said, smiling back at me.
"I’m glad you can come."
We walked in silence for a few more minutes before Zoe spoke up again.
"Hey, do you want to go see a movie with me tonight?"
"That sounds great," I said, smiling at her.
"I would love to."
After class, Zoe led us to her favorite Thai restaurant, two blocks away.
The aroma of spices filled the small space as we squeezed into a corner booth.
Helen chattered about her latest dating disaster while I picked at my pad thai, barely tasting it.
When Zoe mentioned tonight's horror movie marathon at the downtown theater, I perked up slightly - Reynolds hated scary films.
My phone buzzed again with Xander's call, and I flipped it face-down on the table.
Helen raised an eyebrow but didn't comment.
