"Get out of my room!"
I yelled at her.
She stood at the door with a smirk on her face.
"Make me," she said with a smile.
I jumped off my bed, ready to get into a fight with her.
She knows I hate it when people come into my room without my permission and here she was doing just that and smiling as if it was what she wanted me to do.
"Betty! I said get out of my room," I said, still trying to get to her.
She rolled her eyes and walked out.
"Finally," I said, taking a deep breath to calm myself down.
I hated it when we got into fights and I always ended up with a scolding from our parents.
They never took my side and I didn't know why.
With a sigh, I fell back on my bed and closed my eyes.
I could hear my phone ring but I wasn't in the mood for anything.
I just wanted to sleep and forget this day ever happened.
I groaned as I felt my phone vibrating beside me and I turned over, putting it between my legs to stop it from disturbing me further.
I was still trying to sleep when I felt my phone ring again.
Annoyance flooded my system once again and I reached for my phone, ready to throw it across the room when I saw who was calling me.
Jake's name was flashing on the screen and my thumb hovered over the answer button as I heard Betty's footsteps walking down the hallway.
I could hear her talking sweetly to Mom about something I probably did wrong.
Typical.
I stared at my phone in my hand as it continued to buzz.
Jake was probably calling to tell me we were still on for the arcade later but I just wanted to be alone right now.
He was the only one who knew how it felt to deal with Betty and he knew just what to say when she got on my nerves but I didn't know if I wanted to talk to him right now.
My phone buzzed for the fifth time and I just stared at it.
I could hear the cars passing outside my window and see the shadows of the trees dancing on my ceiling as they were blown by the wind.
The muffled sound of Betty's laughter floated up from downstairs as Mom murmured something sympathetic to her.
My stomach turned over.
My phone buzzed again and I grabbed it, staring at Jake's name on the screen.
He was probably worried about me since we had a big fight last night and he knew I hated it when she came into my room without my permission.
I knew that if I answered, we would have to talk about what happened and I wasn't ready to do that yet.
She won again and I didn't know how to tell him that.
The phone trembled in my hand as Betty's footsteps echoed up the stairs once again.
I stared at Jake's name on my phone screen, my thumb hovering over the answer button as I heard her slow footsteps coming up the hallway.
She was probably coming back to torture me some more.
She was a sadist and she loved it when she got on my nerves.
My phone buzzed again and I knew Jake wasn't going to stop calling until I picked up.
He was stubborn that way.
I could hear Betty pause outside my door as I held the phone up to my ear, hoping she wouldn't hear me talking to Jake.
"Hey, you okay?" Jake's voice came through, steady and concerned.
"Not really," I whispered, glancing at the door to make sure Betty wasn't listening.
"Did she do it again?" he asked, his tone shifting to one of frustration.
I nodded, even though I knew he couldn't see me.
I sat cross-legged on my bed, my phone pressed against my ear as I watched the shadows of the trees dance across my ceiling.
"Yeah, she did. She just stood there in my doorway smirking at me."
"What did you do?"
Jake asked, his voice patient.
"I told her to leave but she wouldn't. I told her a few times and then I slammed the door in her face."
"Damn, Ethan. Did she tell your mom?"
I heard Jake curse under his breath and I clenched my jaw.
I could hear the floorboards creak outside my door and I knew Betty was still out there, probably listening to what I was saying to Jake.
I shifted positions on my bed, moving closer to the window so that the sound of the passing cars would drown out my words.
"She went downstairs and told Mom that I was mean to her. She put on that fake innocent act and Mom believed her."
"Damn it," Jake muttered.
"I'm sorry, man. That sucks."
I nodded, even though I knew he couldn't see me.
I could hear him shuffling around in his room as he moved around.
"Next time you should record her doing it," Jake said.
I clenched my jaw at his suggestion.
"Listen, Ethan, you can't keep letting her get to you like this," Jake said, his voice firm yet understanding.
"I know, but it's hard when Mom always takes her side," I replied, feeling the frustration knotting in my chest.
"Maybe it's time we show your mom what Betty's really like when she's not around," Jake suggested, a hint of determination in his tone.
