I was in my last year of high school and the best player on our school football team.
My coach had gotten me a job with one of our alumni, Mark Wilson, who was the assistant coach of our town's college football team.
He had two daughters with his wife Sarah who was also an employee of the college.
They both had to go on business trips at the same time and asked me to babysit their fifteen-year-old daughter, Jade.
Normally, I would have suggested they send her to camp with the other kids her age but they were both already scheduled for hers and they didn't want to change it at the last minute.
They also trusted me completely and knew that I would watch over her while they were away.
They had become like a second family to me and I would do anything for them.
I agreed and for two weeks, I would live in their house and babysit Jade who was a year older than me but still in high school.
I hadn't met her before but she was away at camp and would meet her when she returned.
I was fine with this.
I would be studying and working out anyway and it would be nice to have a quiet place to study in addition to having all of their food in the fridge.
I had been there three days when I heard a noise downstairs and realized that Jade must have returned from camp early.
I moved quietly down the carpeted stairs, my hand on the wooden railing.
The house was dark except for a dim light coming from the living room.
My footsteps were heavy against the creaking floorboards as I approached.
Through the doorway, I caught glimpses of someone shuffling around behind the couch.
I stopped in the entrance, unsure if it was really Jade or an intruder.
I stood there for a long time, waiting for them to come out but there was no movement.
I cleared my throat and said loudly, "Jade, is that you?"
The figure behind the couch froze mid-movement.
I moved closer to the couch, my heart still pounding from the tension.
The dim light came from a lamp in the corner of the room, casting a golden glow over the furniture.
The person behind the couch slowly emerged into the light.
It was Jade, standing in her camp uniform - khaki shorts and a blue t-shirt with the camp logo emblazoned on it.
Her long dark hair was tied back in a messy ponytail and she had a mischievous grin on her face.
I switched on the main lights and tried to act like I wasn't just caught spying on her.
"You're back early," I said as she stepped around the couch.
She nodded, "Yeah, I got homesick."
"Well, welcome home," I replied, realizing this was just the beginning.
She smiled and then turned back behind the couch.
I watched as she pulled out a large pizza box from behind the couch, the logo of Tony's Pizzeria emblazoned on top.
She must have picked it up on her way home from camp.
I moved into the kitchen to grab plates while she hopped up onto a barstool at the counter.
She swung her legs back and forth as she opened the box, revealing a steaming hot pizza with melted cheese and pepperoni.
The aroma filled the kitchen and my stomach growled in anticipation.
We both reached for the first slice at the same time, our hands brushing together as we did so.
She paused and looked up at me through her lashes, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Did my parents tell you why they really needed you to babysit me?" she asked, her voice teasing yet serious.
I hesitated, unsure of what she was getting at. "No, they just said they trusted me to keep an eye on you."
She smirked, taking a bite of her pizza. "Well, let's just say there's more to it than that."
I sat down next to her at the counter, our knees almost touching.
The pizza steam rose between us, filling the air with the smell of melted cheese.
She chewed slowly, making me wait for an answer.
My heart beat fast as I watched her take a sip of her soda.
Finally, she turned to face me, her knee brushing against mine as she did so.
"Mom and Dad aren't really on business trips," she said, picking at the crust of her pizza.
"They're at marriage counseling in Denver. They've been fighting a lot lately and they needed some time away."
She explained how they had been arguing for months but tried to keep it from her.
They were trying to hide their problems but she knew something was wrong.
