I was still trying to figure out what to do with this strange dream, when a hand touched my shoulder and I turned my head to see a pregnant woman in front of me.
She smiled at me and said, "Hello, how are you doing today?"
"I'm fine, thank you," I replied, and she chuckled.
"Would you like to come home with me?" she asked.
I was about to say no, but then I thought maybe this could be a good opportunity for me to observe some science.
"Yes, please," I replied, and she smiled.
"Great, follow me."
I followed her as she walked and tried to keep my conversation light and entertaining.
"Are you married?" I asked her.
"Not yet," she replied.
"Do you have any children?"
"No."
"Boy or girl?"
"I don't know yet."
"You're expecting, right?"
"Yes."
"How many months are you?"
"Nine months."
She stopped walking and turned to face me as she smiled.
"Would you like to come in and have something to eat?"
"Yes, please," I replied, and she nodded before opening the door and inviting me in.
As we walked in, I noticed that her belly was kind of big, and I wondered if it was because she was nine months pregnant.
After washing our hands, we sat down at the dining table and she served us some food.
The Baby Trap
I lean back in my dining chair, studying her as she moves around the kitchen.
Under the warm kitchen lights, something catches my eye - her skin seems to emit a subtle glow, almost pearl-like in its sheen.
When I point it out, commenting on how pregnancy seems to agree with her complexion, she pauses mid-motion while setting down a plate.
Her eyes meet mine, and she lets out a gentle laugh that sounds oddly familiar.
The sound triggers a strange sensation in my chest, like a tugging behind my ribs.
The Baby Trap
She resumes serving but keeps glancing at me with knowing looks, her luminous skin seeming to pulse with each movement.
"Do you remember me?" she asks softly, her voice carrying a hint of nostalgia.
I blink, taken aback by the question, and reply, "Should I?"
Her smile widens, enigmatic and warm, as she says, "You once promised to find me again when the stars aligned."
I lean back in my wooden kitchen chair, studying her face for any hint of recognition.
The ceiling fan whirs softly above us, casting a gentle breeze across the table.
She reaches across the table, her hand trembling slightly as she extends it towards me.
I watch in fascination as her slender fingers brush against my wrist, sending a jolt of electricity up my arm.
It's as if time itself has paused, leaving only the two of us suspended in this moment.
Suddenly, fragments of memories flood through my mind - a shared heartbeat, darkness, warmth.
The room seems to spin around me, and I feel a lump forming in my throat.
"We made that promise in the womb," she whispers, her voice barely audible over the sound of the fan.
"As twins."
My hands begin to shrink before my eyes, and I feel myself becoming smaller and smaller until I'm no longer sitting in the chair.
The Baby Trap
From my new position on the floor, I stare up at my sister's towering form.
My adult clothes are now pooled loosely around me, and I realize that my body has transformed into that of an infant.
I try to push myself up with my tiny limbs, but they feel weak and uncoordinated.
She kneels down beside me, her pregnant belly prominent as she gently lifts me from the pile of clothes.
My bare skin prickles against the cool air as she cradles me against her chest.
I glance down at my hands, now small and chubby, with fingers that barely have the strength to grip the fabric of her shirt.
She carries me upstairs to a room filled with soft yellows and greens.
A crib stands in one corner, adorned with plush toys and a mobile that gently sways above it.
She places me on a changing table, and I squirm uncomfortably as she undresses me.
As she wraps me in a warm blanket, I realize I've returned to the beginning, where promises are made anew.
My sister settles into a padded rocking chair by the window, cradling me against her chest.
The gentle motion of the chair makes my tiny body relax, despite the racing thoughts in my mind.
She begins humming softly, a melody that stirs faint memories from before birth.
My infant reflexes take over as I curl my fingers around her thumb and press my face into the warmth of her skin.
The setting sun casts long shadows across the nursery floor while she rocks steadily back and forth.
The Baby Trap
My eyelids grow heavy, and I fight to stay awake, but her heartbeat and the soothing rhythm of her voice pull me deeper toward sleep.
As my eyes close, I understand that some promises are never truly forgotten.
