I was at practice in the football field when I saw someone waving at me.
It was a nineyearold girl.
She had a big smile on her face as she waved at me.
I stopped what I was doing and walked over to her.
"Hey! What are you doing here?"
I asked her.
"My mom sent me to get you. She says that it's time," the little girl answered.
I looked at her in confusion.
Who in the world was she?
Then I remembered what Mrs. Anderson had told me yesterday.
I nodded my head at her and we walked to my car.
I got in and started the engine.
I looked at her and asked, "What's your name?"
"Jade, Jade Anderson," she answered.
I smiled at her and said, "Nice to meet you, Jade. I'm Jack Thompson."
She smiled widely at me and said, "Nice to meet you, Jack."
Today, her mom, Lily Anderson, was leaving for a business trip.
She would be away for two weeks and had asked me to babysit her daughter while she was away.
I drove us to her house.
I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel as I drove.
It was a habit of mine.
I didn't even realize I was doing it until we were already there.
Without thinking, I hit the power button on the radio.
My workout playlist blasted through the speakers.
Rap music filled the car and Jade jumped in her seat, covering her ears.
I fumbled with the controls, trying to turn it off, but it was too loud for me to hear myself think.
The lyrics were explicit and I could feel my face burning red as they echoed through the car before I finally managed to silence them.
"Sorry about that," I muttered, gripping the steering wheel tightly in my hands.
Jade slowly lowered her hands from her ears, giving me a wary look.
I pulled into her driveway, still mortified.
I parked and turned off the engine, but neither of us made a move to get out.
Jade sat silently in the passenger seat, studying me with those big brown eyes.
I cleared my throat awkwardly, reaching over to grab my gym bag.
I stuffed my phone into my pocket and then we both opened our doors and got out.
I closed the car door behind me and turned to face her.
She was watching me with her hands on her hips and I braced myself for a lecture about how I shouldn't have played explicit music in front of her.
But when I met her eyes, she wasn't looking angry.
In fact, she was grinning mischievously at me.
"Hey, I'm sorry about that. I forgot that was playing. I didn't mean to offend you."
I apologized, looking down at her.
She was a little thing, but she was fierce.
She nodded and started up the walkway to her front door.
I followed behind her and we both were still grinning.
I had a feeling this was going to be a great two weeks.
As she reached for her house key, she realized it wasn't there.
She started digging through her backpack.
I took the time to look around the yard.
There was a tall wooden fence on one side of the lawn that blocked off the neighbor's house.
I peeked between the wooden slats and saw a big swimming pool.
It looked like it had been freshly cleaned, as it was sparkling in the afternoon sunlight.
The water was so clear and blue that I could see all the way to the bottom of it. My eyes lingered on it as Jade searched through her bag for the key.
The neighbor's house was empty.
I hadn't seen any cars in their driveway and no lights were on inside, even though it was almost evening.
Jade had mentioned that they were on vacation, so that made sense.
My eyes flickered back to the pool as Jade muttered under her breath.
The lock must have been sticky because she couldn't get the key in right away.
She huffed in frustration, bending down to study the lock more closely as she tried again.
My sweaty football practice came to mind as I looked at the pool water again.
The sun was hot overhead and my jersey had been plastered to my chest all practice long with sweat.
I'd kill for a dip in that cool water right now. It wouldn't be right, of course.
I was supposed to be a responsible babysitter here, not breaking into my babysitter's neighbor's house to go swimming nude in their pool.
But damn if that didn't sound really tempting right now...
As I watched Jade struggle with that lock, an idea began forming in my mind...
Maybe breaking my responsible image would be worth it for a quick dip...
"Jade! Are you okay? Do you need some help?"
I asked her from behind as I watched her struggle with her sticky front door lock.
"No, I've got it," she replied, giving the lock one last twist before it clicked open.
She turned to me with a triumphant smile and added, "But if you're thinking about that pool, I know where they keep the spare key."
I blinked in surprise, and she continued, "Mom always says it's our secret escape when things get too hot around here."
I helped her shove the door open and then we stepped inside.
The house was dark, with all the shades pulled closed.
I followed her as she moved through the entryway and into the main living area.
It was quiet, except for a faint rustling sound that seemed to be coming from the kitchen.
Jade reached for the light switch, but I stopped her.
My heart pounded in my chest as I strained my ears to listen.
The rustling grew louder and I heard a faint scratching noise coming from around the corner.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized what it might be...
Then I remembered something...
My old baseball bat.
It was leaning against the coat rack by the front door.
I'd left it here last week when we played catch in her backyard. My eyes darted to it as I reached for it.
I grabbed it and gripped the handle tightly in my hand.
Jade tugged on my sleeve, whispering, "My cat is in there."
She nodded toward the kitchen where the sound was coming from.
"Stay behind me," I whispered back to her, motioning for her to move behind me.
She nodded and I started moving forward, leading us both toward the kitchen.
As we rounded the corner, a pair of glowing eyes met mine, and the cat bolted past us, leaving only silence in its wake.
I froze, my heart pounding in my chest.
I looked around the kitchen, but there was no one there.
The cat had been alone.
I let out a sigh of relief and slumped against the kitchen counter.
I felt a little foolish for overreacting like that.
But I'd never been one to mess with wild animals.
I set the bat down on the counter and then turned to look out the window.
The neighbor's pool beckoned me from just beyond the fence.
The water was so blue and inviting, shimmering in the afternoon sunlight.
Jade moved past me, reaching up to grab a bag of cat food from the pantry.
She poured some into her cat's bowl and then set it down on the floor.
As she straightened back up, I said casually, "It sure is hot today. I'm still sweating from practice."
Her head whipped around and she stared at me intently. "You want to use their pool?" she asked, her voice full of excitement.
I shrugged, feeling a little guilty for even suggesting it.
"Maybe. I don't know..."
I muttered, looking back out the window at that sparkling water.
"It's not like they'll know," Jade said matter-of-factly as she watched me study their pool.
"I'm sure they won't mind."
She shrugged and then turned to walk away from me.
"Where are you going?"
I asked her as she headed toward the living room.
"To get changed," she replied without looking back at me over her shoulder.
"Wait," I called after her, stopping her in her tracks.
She turned back to face me, raising an eyebrow in question as she waited for me to continue. "Where is that spare key?"
I asked her quietly, trying not to sound too eager.
She grinned mischievously at me and then replied, "It's hidden in a fake rock by their fence. But we have to be quick. Mom says we can only use it if no one is home."
Then she turned and jogged off down the hall toward her bedroom.
I stood there for a moment, watching her go before turning back to look out the window again at that pool.
It was calling my name...
And Jade had just given us permission to use it...
It was too tempting...
And I knew I couldn't resist...
After all, I'd already broken my responsible image by playing explicit music in front of her...
What was one more thing?
I turned away from the window, feeling a mix of excitement and guilt.
"Are you sure about this?" I called after her, my voice echoing slightly in the quiet house.
She reappeared in the doorway, already in her swimsuit, and said with a wink, "Only one way to find out."
