Kala
I have been waiting on this deserted road for hours, just keeping an eye on my watch, and it says 12:05 AM.
I already gave birth three times, but this time I just can’t wait to meet my new baby.
I just wanted to go home so that I can give birth to my baby at the government hospital.
Suddenly, I hear a vehicle coming from a distance.
I see the light of the vehicle and immediately raise my hands to stop it.
As it comes closer, I see that it is a lorry and it stops right in front of me.
The driver gets down and looks at me in surprise.
"Are you looking for a lift?" he asked.
"Yes," I replied.
He immediately came to my side and helped me into the lorry.
He is kind of surprised to see me pregnant at this time of night alone on this road.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
"I am going home," I replied.
"Okay, no problem," he said.
As we drove on the highway, I was feeling sleepy, but the heat of the lorry kept me awake.
The lorry driver suddenly stopped the lorry at the side of the road.
"Is everything okay?" I asked him.
"Yes," he replied.
"I just want to make sure that you are comfortable."
The cabin of the lorry is getting warmer and warmer.
I shift uncomfortably in my seat, my saree clinging to my sweaty skin.
The driver keeps adjusting the rearview mirror, his eyes darting between the road and my reflection.
My eyelids grow heavy despite the heat, and I lean back against the worn leather seat.
Through half-closed eyes, I notice his gaze lingering on my swollen belly, visible through my damp saree.
His breathing becomes audible over the hum of the engine.
He grips the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles whitening.
The lorry resumes its journey, but I can't shake the feeling that something has irrevocably changed.
The lorry's engine hums steadily as we drive through the dark road.
My saree clings to my swollen belly, making each movement uncomfortable in the stuffy cabin.
The driver keeps glancing at me, his eyes lingering longer each time.
When we hit a bump, he reaches out to steady me, but his hand stays there, hovering near my shoulder.
I try to focus on the road ahead, but my heart races as his fingers brush against my arm.
Slowly, deliberately, he moves his hand down, until his palm rests on my belly, pressing against the damp fabric of my saree.
I tense, realizing that this journey is not just about reaching the hospital anymore.
