Jordy's pale skin carries a slightly unhealthy pallor, hinting at a life spent mostly indoors, accompanied by a few acne scars on his forehead. A faint scar on his chin serves as a reminder of a past confrontation, which he often downplays with bravado. Jordy’s clothing style is designed to draw attention, albeit often missing the mark. Personality-wise, Jordy is manipulative and cunning, adept at using mind games to his advantage. I, Allie Bayles Souleph, am eighteen today, and this last year of my teenage life is going to be epic.
I can feel it in my bones.
My best bud, Maxon Taylor, will be by my side through it all because we are that rare breed of best friends who never drift apart.
We are the ultimate team.
Our friendship is locked tight.
And I have a plan to make this last year of high school our most memorable one yet.
It involves adventure, art, and a little manipulation of my best bud.
Here’s the plan: manipulate Max into taking a road trip with me to the indie art festival three hours away.
Convince him to model for me while I sketch the scenes from the festival, which will later become the setting for my graphic novel.
While at the festival, talk him into posing for a portrait, which I’ll enter into the national school art contest to ensure I win the coveted scholarship and get into my dream college.
Then after we win the scholarship and get into the elite college program, we’ll celebrate our victory by creating our own graphic novel together.
We’ll spend our days designing games, our nights creating art, and our free time adventuring and exploring our creativity.
We’ll live the dream together.
The Art of Falling
I invited Max over to my place, hoping we could have a chill afternoon.
He arrived just as I was finishing up the last of the dishes from lunch.
Whiskers, my mischievous kitten, darted between his legs, nearly knocking him over.
"Whoa! Easy there, little dude."
Max laughed and reached down to pet Whiskers, who was now rubbing against his leg.
"Hey, Allie. Happy birthday."
He handed me a small gift box wrapped in bright pink paper.
I took it and thanked him before setting it on the counter.
I’d open it later.
I was more interested in getting our afternoon started.
"Come on in. I’m ready for our lazy day."
We headed into the living room and plopped down on the couch.
The Art of Falling
Rufus, my old bulldog, plodded in after us and rested his head on Max’s knee.
It was his way of welcoming Max into our home. "So what’s the plan for today?"
Max asked as he scratched Rufus behind the ears.
"I was thinking we could hang out and brainstorm some ideas for my graphic novel."
I pulled out a stack of sketches from my backpack and spread them out on the coffee table.
Max leaned forward to examine them more closely.
"What do you think? I want to create a story that takes place in our town. Something that captures the essence of our community."
Max studied each sketch carefully before giving me his thoughts.
"I like this one with the sunset over the ocean. It gives off a great vibe." "Yeah, I was thinking of using that as the cover for my book."
I pointed to a rough sketch of a girl standing at the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean.
"And then this one will be the opening scene where she discovers her power."
Max examined each sketch carefully before offering suggestions and ideas for how I could make them better.
We spent hours brainstorming and tossing ideas back and forth.
As the sun began to set, casting an orange glow over my sketches, I casually brought up my idea for us to take a road trip to the indie art festival.
"So, Max, have you ever heard about this indie art festival that happens every year three hours away?"
Max shook his head no as he examined one of my sketches more closely. "Well, I was thinking maybe we could go this year. It would be fun to check out all the different artists and get some inspiration for our own projects."
Max looked up, a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
"Are you sure it's just about inspiration, Allie? Or is there something else you're not telling me?"
I hesitated for a moment, then decided to come clean. "Okay, you got me. I want to enter a portrait of you into the national school art contest."
The Art of Falling
Max shifted uncomfortably on the couch, his fingers tracing patterns on Rufus’s fur.
"I don’t know, Allie," he mumbled, avoiding my gaze.
"Being in the spotlight isn’t really my thing."
I paused, surprised by his reluctance.
Max was always the adventurous one, ready to dive into anything without hesitation.
"But your portrait is amazing," I insisted, holding up the sketch.
"It deserves to be seen."
He glanced at it briefly, then back at me.
"What if people don’t like it?"
He asked quietly.
I placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
"We’ll face it together," I promised.
The Art of Falling
"And who cares what other people think anyway?"
Max shrugged, still looking unsure.
The Art of Falling
