I don’t do charity.
I don’t do kids.
And I especially don’t do both at the same time.
But here I am, being dragged to a children’s hospital gala.
I can’t believe my agent talked me into this.
"Mr. Harrington, this is Mr. Kit and his kids, Alastor and Annabelle."
My jaw drops as I see none other than William Kit, the renowned astrophysicist.
He has discovered several planets and has even named a few of them.
I have no idea what he’s doing here.
"Mr. Kit, it’s an honor to meet you."
I shake his hand.
"Please, call me William."
He smiles.
"And these are my kids, Alastor and Annabelle."
A 10 year old boy with floppy blond hair and blue eyes looks up at me, while a 12 year old girl with auburn hair and brown eyes glares at me.
I hate kids.
They’re innocent enough, but they’re so damn annoying.
"Nice to meet you," I say to them both.
They both ignore me and start talking to each other.
"William, what brings you here?"
I ask.
"I was invited to auction off a trip to one of the planets I discovered."
His eyes sparkle.
"But I got a call from NASA, and they want me to go on a mission. They gave me two seats." He looks at his kids.
"I was thinking of bringing Annabelle and Alastor."
The Arcturus Prophecy
I lean against a marble pillar and watch his face light up as he talks.
He gestures with his hands.
"They discovered a new planet, and it has plant life. It’s primitive, but it’s plant life. They need me to go there and collect samples."
His son tugs at his sleeve.
"Dad, can we wear space suits? Will we be in zero gravity?"
Annabelle rolls her eyes.
"Alastor, you’re so annoying."
But I can see the curiosity in her eyes.
William turns to me again.
"I’m sorry, where was I? Ah yes. So they need me to go there and collect samples. I’m bringing Annabelle and Alastor. And I have one more seat left."
The Arcturus Prophecy
He stops talking mid-sentence and looks at me with newfound interest.
He pulls out his phone and shows me pictures of the planet.
The pictures are of a greenish-blue planet with a thick atmosphere.
But what catches my attention is the vegetation on the planet.
It’s bioluminescent.
It pulses with an otherworldly rhythm.
I can feel my heart beating faster as I look at the pictures.
This is huge.
This is bigger than huge.
This could be the discovery of a lifetime. "We need one more experienced crew member," William says. "We leave in two days."
The Arcturus Prophecy
"Are you asking me to join your mission?" I stammer, caught off guard.
"Yes, Mr. Harrington," William replies, his eyes locking onto mine with intensity.
Annabelle smirks, "Guess you won't be doing charity after all."
Standing in the dimly lit corner of the gala, I study the holographic images floating from William’s tablet.
The planet’s surface glows with patches of blue-green light, like nothing I’ve seen in my countless lunar expeditions.
Alastor tugs at my sleeve, pointing excitedly at what looks like crystalline trees.
Annabelle leans in, her voice filled with memorized facts about atmospheric readings and potential life forms.
I glance at William’s expectant face, then back at the kids’ eager expressions.
The Arcturus Prophecy
My usual instinct to step away from children falters.
"Alright, I'm in," I say, trying to match their enthusiasm.
Alastor jumps up and down, "Yes! We're going to space with a real astronaut!"
Annabelle crosses her arms, feigning indifference, "Just don't slow us down, Mr. Harrington."
