I was hiking.
I’d been hiking for hours.
I had to get off this mountain before it got dark.
I was going to get off this mountain, I was going to get back to my car and drive home.
I wasn’t going to spend the night on this mountain.
It wasn’t going to happen.
So I kept walking.
And I kept walking until I fell.
I saw it coming, I saw the root sticking out from the tree and knew I was going to trip over it.
But I couldn’t stop myself in time and went flying.
My arms went out to the sides as I felt myself flying through the air, unable to stop myself from hitting the ground.
I landed with a thud and felt my breath leave my body as my chest hit the dirt.
I lay there stunned for a moment, trying to catch my breath and figure out if I was ok or not.
As I tried to sit up, sharp pains shot through my body from both my ankle and my chest, making it difficult for me to breathe.
"Fuck," I groaned aloud, grabbing at my chest before dropping my hand down to my ankle, knowing I couldn’t stay here.
I slowly got up, putting all of my weight on one leg while I used the other to help push myself up off the ground.
As I stood there, trying to catch my breath and figuring out what to do next, I realized just how turned around I was.
I scanned the darkening forest, trying to find any sign of the trail I had been on.
I looked around, but all I could see were trees and more trees.
I had no idea where I was or how to get back to the trail.
I knew I had to keep moving, so I started pushing through the underbrush, using tree trunks to help me along.
My ankle screamed in pain with each step, but I couldn’t stop now.
The sun was setting fast, casting long shadows across the ground and making it even harder to see any trail markers or familiar landmarks.
Sweat dripped down my face as I struggled to catch my breath, my heart pounding in my chest.
I stopped for a moment, leaning against a thick pine tree to try and regain my composure.
The pain in my ankle was excruciating, and I knew I needed to find shelter before nightfall. As I stood there, trying to gather myself, I noticed something in the distance.
It looked like a clearing, and my heart leapt with hope that maybe this was a way out of the woods.
I hobbled forward as best I could, gritting my teeth against the pain in my ankle.
But as I got closer, my heart sank when I realized it wasn’t a clearing at all - just a natural gap in the trees where sunlight filtered through.
The shadows grew longer and darker around me as night began to fall.
I stumbled forward, my flashlight battery having died hours ago.
Each step sent jolts of pain through my ankle, and branches scraped against my face as I pushed through the dense underbrush.
The temperature kept dropping, and I was shivering violently now, my thin hiking shirt soaked with sweat and offering no protection against the cold.
My throat burned with thirst - the last drops of water from my canteen had been gone long before sunset.
Exhausted and disoriented, I miscalculated a step on the uneven ground and pitched forward.
The world spun as I tumbled down a rocky slope, my head cracking against something hard.
Sharp pain exploded behind my eyes, then everything faded to black.
