I was working out at the gym when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach.
I thought I was having a miscarriage or something because I'd heard stories about women getting pregnant and working out, then they have a miscarriage.
I stopped and was trying to catch my breath.
One of the trainers came over to me.
She was the meanest trainer in the gym and was known for bullying clients, making them do more than they could and yelling at them.
She made all her clients weigh in every week and if they gained weight, she would make them do 100 push ups right there on the spot.
She was really mean to pregnant clients, which meant me today.
Some said she wasn't even human because she didn't seem to care about anything — not her clients, not her job, not her family, not even herself.
I always tried to avoid her because I knew how mean she was.
I didn't want that today when I was in pain.
I just wanted to go home and rest until the pain went away, then worry about coming to the gym the following day.
I clutched my stomach and started gathering my things.
I was trying to slip out before Amy saw me.
I glanced around and saw her sitting at her desk, then she got up and started walking over to me.
She had a clipboard in her hand and was pointing to the scale in the corner.
My gym bag felt heavier than it ever had as I tried to hurry and get out of there before she reached me.
"Emily, come here. You need to weigh in," she said as she walked up to me.
"I'm sorry, Amy, but I think I'm going to have a miscarriage," I tried explaining.
"No, you're not. Now step on the scale first."
She was holding her clipboard in one hand and pointing at the scale with the other.
All of the other gym members were watching us now as they stopped their workouts to see what would happen.
I checked my phone and realized Michael hadn't answered my text about coming to pick me up yet, so I was stuck with Amy. She was blocking the door with her arms crossed over her chest and looking like a bodybuilding woman from hell.
She took a step closer, and I took a step back.
The scale was getting closer and closer to me, and I didn't know what to do.
I clutched my stomach as another wave of pain hit me.
I was starting to feel dizzy and faint, but Amy shoved the scale forward with her foot.
"Get on, Emily. Rules are rules," she said as she moved closer to me.
I shook my head, not wanting to get on that scale.
My hands were shaking as I gripped the wall to try to steady myself.
The other gym members were whispering and pointing at us now, and some of them had their phones out to record it.
Amy tapped her clipboard impatiently.
"Five pounds up from last week," she announced loudly as she scanned her workout sheet.
"That's fifty pushups."
I shook my head firmly.
"No. I won't do them."
