The sky was dark when I arrived here last night, but as I got out of my sleeping bag this morning, the early morning sun allowed me to see what I couldn’t last night.
I was surrounded by mountains.
I couldn’t see the farm yet, but I knew it was somewhere nearby.
After hiking for about two hours, I finally saw the sign: Black Peak Alpaca Farm.
I had been walking for days to get here.
I had never seen an alpaca in my life, but something drew me to this place.
I didn’t know how I would get back home, but at this point, I didn’t care.
I just wanted to learn about alpacas.
I quickened my pace, and soon I saw a house in front of me.
A long dirt driveway led to the house, and a small car was parked there.
A man in his mid-forties with a hat on his head and a pair of binoculars around his neck was standing near the house looking somewhere far away.
He seemed to be looking at something that caught his attention, and then he suddenly turned around and saw me coming toward him.
"Hello," I said when I got closer to him.
"Good morning," he answered, looking at me in confusion.
"Are you Mr. Ben?"
"Yes," he answered.
"I’m Alex Harlow."
The Alpaca King
He lowered his binoculars and looked at me.
"I’m sorry, but I don’t remember meeting you before," he said, and then he pointed to the path that was going up the mountain.
"You see that path? It’s a trail that cuts through the rocky terrain. My herd grazes in the high meadows during summer mornings. The steep cliffs surrounding the meadows provide natural protection, and the altitude makes the grass sweeter."
He took out a map from his jacket and spread it on the hood of his car.
The map was worn and had many markings on it.
The Alpaca King
He pointed to several places.
"These are some of my favorite grazing spots. If we head up there after breakfast, we should be able to catch them."
He led me to the back of the house, where a small wooden door opened into a rustic farmhouse kitchen.
The smell of fresh coffee and bacon filled the air.
I sank into a wooden chair, my legs aching from days of hiking.
Ben bustled around the kitchen, cracking eggs into a bowl and stirring them with a fork.
Through the window, I watched the sun climbing higher over the mountains, casting long shadows across the pastures.
Soon, Ben set down a plate in front of me loaded with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and toasted bread.
He sat down across from me, his own plate piled high.
We ate in silence for a few minutes, savoring the warmth of the food and the quiet of the morning.
Finally, Ben spoke up.
"Alpaca farming is hard work," he said.

"We start early every morning, checking on the herd and making sure they have enough food and water. We also have to keep an eye out for predators like coyotes and mountain lions."
He took a bite of his eggs before continuing.
"Once we’ve checked on the herd, we head back to the farm to do some chores. We have to clean out their enclosures and make sure they have fresh bedding. We also have to trim their nails and check their teeth."
As he talked, I could hear footsteps coming from the hallway that led into the kitchen.
