I was staring at my hand.
The same hand that touched an extraterrestrial being just minutes before.
As I stood there, the tears I had been holding back began to fall from my eyes and trickle down my cheeks, one after another, each one dropping to the forest floor, splashing against the wet earth without effect.
I was unaware of how long I had been standing there, looking at my hand, until I heard him call my name.
I turned and ran back to the house, not stopping until I reached my bedroom, where I collapsed onto my bed, sobbing uncontrollably.
I had no idea how long I lay there, but it wasn’t long enough.
Eventually, my body relaxed and sleep overtook me.
The next morning, I woke to hear my brother calling my name.
"Hey, Ev, are you up?"
He poked his head through the doorway and flashed me a crooked smile.
"Yogurt parfait?"
I stared at the glass he placed on my nightstand, but my hand shook as I reached for the spoon.
The morning sun was streaming through my window, casting a warm glow over everything in its path.
It reminded me of the soft, ethereal light that surrounded me yesterday.
Landon sat on the edge of my bed, dipping his spoon into his own parfait and causing the mattress to dip slightly from his weight.
I had always been able to sense him more than anyone else.
Even as kids, I could tell when he was in the room with me.
He had a way of making me feel safe, even though we were only a year apart in age.
As he sat there eating, I noticed that his eyes were fixed on mine, and I realized that my eyes must be red from crying.
My cheeks felt wet too, so I reached up to wipe them with the back of my hand.
"Are you okay?" he asked me.
His voice was full of genuine concern.
I opened my mouth to explain what happened yesterday, but I couldn’t think of how to put it into words.
How do you describe something that seems so impossible?
The spoon clattered against the side of the glass as another wave of memories washed over me. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and sent a text to Dr. Martinez, asking for an emergency session that day.
She replied immediately, letting me know that she could see me at 11am.
I set the phone back down and turned my attention to Landon.
"What’s going on? You’ve been acting really strange lately."
He studied me intently for a moment before responding, "You mean more than usual?"
I rolled my eyes at him and sighed.
"Seriously, Landon. What’s wrong?"
He shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don’t know. Just a feeling I have. It’s like something is off."
I nodded at him sympathetically and asked, "Do you have any idea what it might be?"
He shook his head no and then went back to eating his breakfast.
I sat there in silence for a few minutes, thinking about what he just said.
I had been having a similar feeling lately too.
Like something was just out of reach or something was about to happen but hadn’t yet.
I didn’t know what it was either, but it was definitely unsettling. After we finished eating our parfaits, we headed out to our cars and drove to work separately.
I had a few hours before my session with Dr. Martinez, so I went to the office and tried to focus on work.
It was difficult though, because my mind kept drifting back to the forest and the strange creature I met there.
I tried to focus on the feeling of his touch, but it was hard to put into words.
It was like nothing I had ever felt before.
It was as if he was touching my very soul.
As the sun began to set, I got in my car and headed to Dr. Martinez’s office for our session.
My hands were still shaking as I gripped the steering wheel, but I managed to make it home without incident.
The session helped a lot, but trying to describe what happened with the alien left me feeling raw and exposed.
I got in my car and headed home, driving down the winding back road that cut through the dense forest.
The sun was setting behind me, casting long shadows across the road and through the trees.
The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and fresh cut grass. The radio crackled as I turned it up, but all that came through were static and white noise.
I tried to adjust it, but nothing seemed to work.
The dashboard lights flickered and then went out completely, plunging me into darkness.
The radio cut out too, leaving only silence filling the car.
My phone screen went dark as well, leaving me without any connection to the outside world.
The engine sputtered and died, causing me to coast onto the shoulder of the road as we came to a stop.
I sat there for a moment, trying to gather my thoughts before getting out of the car and popping the hood.
A rustling sound came from the trees, and I turned to see Landon stepping out of the shadows.
"Ev, what are you doing here?" he asked, his voice tinged with both surprise and concern.
"I could ask you the same thing," I replied, my heart racing as I realized we weren't alone in this strange occurrence.
I grabbed his arm and pulled him closer to my car, scanning the forest for any sign of what was happening.
The radio crackled back to life, but instead of music, a strange static filled the air.
It was different than anything I had ever heard before, sounding like a cross between a howling wolf and a raging fire.
It was both beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
The hair on the back of my neck stood on end as I felt eyes watching me from the shadows.
Landon must have felt it too, because he stood up straighter and took a step back from me.
Through the trees, I saw movement.
It looked like a dark mass, shifting and swirling in ways that seemed impossible.
The light from the setting sun was being absorbed by the darkness, leaving us almost completely in the dark. Landon reached for his phone to call for help, but it was dead just like mine and my car.
A low growl came from the shadows, causing us both to take another step back.
"Landon, do you hear that?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the eerie static.
"Yeah," he replied, his eyes wide with fear. "It's like it's coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time."
"Do you think it's... them?" I asked, my heart pounding as I recalled the alien encounter from the day before.
