My name is Kuga Tae.
I'm a mom who loves my daughter so much and maybe a little bit too much.
I'm an overprotective mom, if not more.
I have a family of three.
Me, my husband Okuma Hokichi, and my daughter Esutibe who was 16 years old when...
When what?
Well, let's start from the beginning.
My husband and I have been married for twenty years now.
We got married when we were both eighteen and we gave birth to Esutibe when we were both nineteen.
We were so happy to have our little angel with us.
We didn't know then that our happiness would soon be destroyed, but not by our daughter Esutibe, but by my beloved husband.
My husband started to suffer from insomnia, but he was secretive about it and didn't want to tell me or anyone in the family.
He was afraid that we would worry about him and tried so hard to look like he was sleeping.
He would come home late every day and fell asleep in his bed immediately as if he was really exhausted, but I noticed that he wasn't sleeping and reported to his doctor about it.
The Adopted Boy
The doctor told me that he was suffering from insomnia and that I should try to help him to sleep.
I tried my best, but nothing seemed to work.
He was always awake at night and fell asleep in the morning when I was going to work.
I didn't know what to do.
One evening, when I was preparing dinner, my husband came into the kitchen with a serious expression on his face.
He stood there for a while before he opened his mouth to talk.
"What is it, Hokichi? You look like you have something important to tell me."
I asked him, looking at him with a serious expression on my face too.
"I contacted an adoption agency. We are going to adopt a child," he said, looking at me with a serious expression on his face.
My heart started beating fast when I heard that.
I didn't expect him to say that.
I looked at him for a while before I opened my mouth to talk.
The Adopted Boy
"Are you sure about this, Hokichi? We haven't talked about it before. Are you sure that you want to expand our family?"
I asked him, looking at him seriously.
"Yes, Tae. I'm sure about it. We need someone who will keep me company at night when you are not here," he said, looking at me seriously.
I looked at him for a while before I nodded my head in agreement. "Okay then. Let's go and talk about it with Esutibe," I said and walked out of the kitchen with him following behind me.
We went into the living room where Esutibe was sitting on the couch watching TV and told her about it.
She didn't say anything or react in any way when we told her about it; she just kept looking at us quietly.
After we finished talking, she stood up from the couch and went into her room without saying anything or reacting in any way.
We looked at each other for a while before we went back into the kitchen to finish preparing dinner silently.
Weeks passed by after we contacted the adoption agency and they were processing our application.
We were waiting for them to call us and tell us that they had found a child for us already.
Finally, one day, they called us and told us that they had found a child for us already and wanted us to come and meet him so that we could decide if we wanted him or not. We were so happy when we heard that and immediately went to meet him so that we could bring him home with us.
The Adopted Boy
One day, when we were coming home from work, we were accompanied by a twelve-year-old American boy named Estiven.
He was standing beside me as I opened the door and stepped into the house with him.
Esutibe was sitting on the couch watching TV.
She looked at us for a while before she looked away and continued watching TV.
"Esutibe, meet your new brother," I said, trying to sound cheerful.
Estiven stood beside me, holding his small backpack in his hand.
He gave her a shy wave, but she just nodded at him before she looked back at the TV.
Hokichi put his hand on my shoulder and looked at me with tired eyes.
I knew what he wanted to tell me without saying it.
We had invited a stranger into our home, hoping he would mend what was silently breaking.
