Once upon a time, in modernday America, a fortyfouryearold Chinese mother named Li Mei made her way across the vast ocean to visit her son, who was studying at a university there.
She had heard so much about this beautiful country from her son and was eager to see for herself what America looked like, to experience the culture, the landscapes, the people.
After arriving in New York, she spent a few days with her son in the big city.
They walked through Central Park, strolled around Times Square, and visited the top of the Empire State Building.
She marveled at the towering skyscrapers and the busy streets, at the diversity of the people and the endless stream of cars.
She had never seen anything like it before and was fascinated by this new world she had entered.
On their fourth day together, while crossing the street on their way back to their hotel, Li Mei suddenly found herself lying on the ground.
Everything around her became blurry and she could feel a pain in her head.
The next time she opened her eyes, she was in a hospital bed.
Her son was standing beside her, holding her hand and crying.
"Mom!" he exclaimed as she looked up at him.
"I was so scared. I thought I lost you."
Li Mei stared at him in confusion.
"Mom?" he said again as she looked away.
"Mom, is everything okay?"
She turned back to him, trying to focus.
Her son's face was blurry and she couldn't quite remember his name.
"Who are you?" she asked, her voice shaking.
Her son looked at her in shock.
"Mom, it's me, your son. Don't you remember me?"
Li Mei shook her head, feeling a sense of panic rising inside her.
"I don't know who you are," she said, her voice trembling.
Her son looked at her with tears in his eyes.
"Mom, I'm so sorry. I was so scared when I saw you fall. I thought I lost you."
Li Mei stared at him, trying to understand what was happening.
She didn't know who this person was or why he was crying.
She didn't even know where she was or how she had gotten there.
All she knew was that she felt scared and alone.
The next few days passed in a blur of doctors' visits and whispered conversations with her son.
Li Mei tried to make sense of what was happening, but everything seemed foggy and unclear.
She couldn't remember anything about her life before coming to America or how she had ended up in the hospital.
Her son told her that she had hit her head when they were crossing the street and that it had caused some damage to her brain.
He said that the doctors were doing everything they could to help her recover, but it would take time. Li Mei listened to her son's words, but they felt like they were coming from a stranger.
She couldn't remember anything about him or their life together.
She didn't even know if she had a husband or other children back home.
All she knew was that she felt scared and alone in this strange place.
One morning, Li Mei woke up feeling restless and confused.
She looked around the hospital room, trying to make sense of where she was and what was happening.
Her son wasn't there, but there were other people moving around outside her door.
She decided to get up and try to find out what was going on.
She slowly got out of bed and made her way to the door.
When she opened it, she saw a hallway stretching out in front of her with rooms on either side.
There were people walking around, some pushing carts or carrying trays of food.
Li Mei watched them for a moment, trying to figure out what they were doing.
