Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you in two weeks, baby girl," my mom kissed me on the forehead before she hugged me and stepped back from the car.
My dad took his turn hugging and kissing me.
He also patted the hood of the car, which was my birthday gift, and smiled at me.
"Be good, Christine. We'll see you when we get back," he said and they got into the cab that was waiting for them.
I waved goodbye as they drove off until they were out of sight.
My parents were going on a vacation to be just the two of them.
They left the house and their car in the hands of their friend, Veronica, who was also in charge of making sure I was okay and didn't get into any trouble.
"Daddy!"
I called out even though I knew they couldn't hear me.
I pouted before I turned around and went into the house where Veronica was waiting for me.
She had her striking blue hair in a bun on top of her head as she wiped her hands with a towel.
"You must be hungry," she said with a smile as she came closer to me.
"Yeah," I nodded slowly.
"I could make us some sandwiches," she offered.
"That sounds great."
I followed her to the kitchen and sat on one of the stools by the island in the middle of the room while I watched her move around with ease.
She leaned against the counter as she sliced tomatoes with a knife.
The sound of the knife hitting the cutting board was the only sound in the room for a while until my stomach growled.
She looked up and smiled at me before she started putting together two sandwiches.
She put turkey, lettuce, and tomato between two thick slices of sourdough.
She slid one of the plates toward me and I looked up at her when her fingers lingered on the edge of the ceramic plate.
The sandwich looked perfect, just like my mom made it.
I felt homesick for a moment before I got up from my stool and wrapped my arms around her waist.
She stiffened for a moment before she relaxed and one hand came up to stroke my hair.
"Christine, there's something I need to tell you," Veronica said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I pulled back slightly, looking up at her with curiosity and a hint of concern.
"Your parents didn't just go on vacation; they left because they needed to handle something important, something they haven't told you about yet."
"What is it?"
I asked and she turned away from me to get the mayonnaise from the fridge.
She opened it and spread a thick layer on the bread.
I watched her with wide eyes, trying to figure out what she just said.
"Mom and dad will tell you when they get back," she said and put a plate with a sandwich in front of me.
I looked up at her, but she was already walking over to the other side of the island where she leaned against the counter with her arms crossed over her chest as she looked at me.
She looked like she wanted to say something else, but then she shook her head slightly and hummed to herself instead.
I stared at her for a long time before I picked up my sandwich and took a small bite.
The taste was good, but I barely registered it because I was so focused on Veronica's gaze that made me feel hot all over.
She walked over to stand behind me, her fingers brushing against my shoulder as she placed her hand on top of it.
I felt a chill run down my spine as she whispered, "There's more to this than you know."
