MidReal Story

Tempted by My Mom’s Friend

Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house. Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much. "Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile. She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink. Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

My parents are going out of town for a few days.
They're leaving me in the care of their friend, Veronica.
I've met her a few times.
She's really nice and pretty.
I remember her smiling at me a lot.
I'm curious to know if she dyes her hair that blue colour that is in her bun.
It is a very striking colour.
I wonder if she has any pets.
I didn't see any when I was with her just now.
Or maybe they're just not around.
Or maybe she has none.
"Christine!"
I hear my mom call me from downstairs.
"Coming, mom," I tell her as I run down the stairs.
"Ready to go, sweetie?" she asks me with a smile.
"Yup," I answer her.
"I'm ready."
"Ok then, let's go," my dad says from behind me.
He kisses my forehead and we all head out the front door to the car waiting for them outside.
Their driver, Henry, is waiting for them with the car doors already opened.
He takes their bags from them and puts them in the trunk before shutting the car doors and standing by the driver's door to await them.
They both kiss me on the forehead and tell me to be good and to listen to Veronica.
"I will, mom and dad," I answer them both.

I watch them get in the car and drive away.
I go back inside the house, shutting the door behind me.
Veronica is already sitting on our couch in the living room.
She has her shoes off and her feet are on the coffee table.
She's looking at something on her phone.
"Hey, Veronica," I say to her as I walk over to where she is.
She looks up at me with a smile.
"Hey, Christine. You want to watch some TV with me?"
"No thanks," I tell her.
"I'm going to my room for a bit."

"Ok," she says.
"See you later."
I turn and walk up the stairs to my room.
I shut my door and start thinking about what I'm going to do.
I remember seeing a $10 bill in my pocket earlier today when I was putting my wallet away.
I pull it out of my pocket and put it in my hand, looking at it before putting it in my other pocket. I go downstairs and into the living room where Veronica is still sitting on the couch watching TV.
She has a bottle of water next to her on the coffee table that wasn't there before.
I walk over to the kitchen and grab a bottle of water from the fridge before heading back into the living room.
I stand next to her and look down at her as she watches TV.
She looks up at me with a smile and asks if I want to watch with her again.
"No thanks," I tell her again and walk over to the other side of the room where there is a bookshelf with some books on it.
I start looking through them, not really paying attention to what they're about just making sure she can see me from where she's sitting. I pretend like I drop something on the floor and bend down to pick it up, dropping the $10 bill that was in my pocket onto the floor near her feet without her noticing.
"Oh, Veronica," I call out innocently as if I didn't just do that on purpose, "I think I dropped something over there."
She looks over at me with a smile before getting up from the couch and walking over to where I am standing.
She bends down to look for whatever it was that I dropped but can't find anything because there isn't anything there except for that $10 bill that she doesn't know is there yet.
"Oh, sorry Christine. There's nothing here," she tells me as she starts standing up from bending down looking around for anything that might be there.
"That's strange," I say, watching her closely as she finally notices the bill and picks it up with a puzzled look.
She looks around the floor for a few more seconds, pretending like she's looking for something else that might have been there.
She slowly stands up with the $10 bill in her hand and looks at me.
"Is this what you dropped?" she asks me in a low voice.
I nod my head yes and she puts the $10 bill into her tank top.
"Interesting way to get my attention," she says as she takes a step closer to me.
I take a step back from her, backing myself against the bookshelf behind me.
She moves closer to me, reaching out to touch my arm with her fingers.
I reach out to put my hand on her waist but she catches it before I can touch her and puts it back into my palm.
"Christine, you know this isn't just about the money, right?" she says softly, her eyes searching mine.
I swallow hard, feeling the weight of her words. "What do you mean, Veronica?"
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
She sighs, glancing at the door as if to ensure we're alone. "Your parents didn't just leave for a trip—they're in trouble, and they wanted me to keep you safe."
