Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"Will you hurry up already?" I huff at my parents who are moving at a snail’s pace.
"We’re coming, Christine," my mom laughs.
"We wanted to beat the traffic but I don’t think that’s going to happen now," she says, looking at my dad who smirks at her.
They both laugh and I just shake my head.
Sometimes it feels like I’m the parent in their relationship.
My parents stop in front of me and I have to stop myself from rolling my eyes again.
"Ok sweetie. We’re here. Veronica is waiting for us and I know you're excited to see her again," my mom says, giving me a kiss on my forehead.
I smile at her because it’s not Veronica I’m excited to see but her son Mateo.
He's two years older than me and every time I’ve met him, I’ve been intrigued by him.
He’s hot, smart and so fucking kind.
The moment I saw his picture on Veronica’s social media I was hooked and every time my parents came to visit them, the more I liked him.
"Are you listening to me?" my mom asks, pushing my chin up so I look at her.
"Sorry mom. I was just thinking about all the things I need to do this summer."
I tell her because it’s not a complete lie.
"Ok sweetie. We’ll be off then. I love you," she says, giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"I love you too mom," I say, watching them walk out the door.
I stand in the foyer for a while, listening to them talk to Veronica.
When they leave, I go upstairs and watch Veronica unpacking her stuff.
She talks about all the things they have planned for the summer but I’m not really listening.
I keep checking my phone to see if Mateo has messaged me but he hasn’t.
"Christine honey, can you please put your phone down for one second?" she says, looking up at me with a smile on her face.
"Sorry," I mumble and put my phone on the bed beside me.
I look at her as she unpacks her clothes.
She’s wearing a black tank top and leggings that are so tight it looks like they’re going to rip any second now.
Her hair is blue and it’s tied in a bun on top of her head.
She has tattoos on her arms and neck and she’s pierced in so many places it’s hard to keep track of them all. "Oh honey, I forgot to mention - Mateo won’t be joining us. He’s spending the summer at his father's place in California," she says, pulling out a bikini from her suitcase and holding it up with a smile on her face.
"But don’t worry, we’ll find other ways to have fun."
"Wait, what?" I blurt out, unable to hide my disappointment.
"Yeah, he left yesterday," Veronica replies, her eyes softening as she notices my reaction.
"But hey, maybe it's time you meet some new people; there's more to life than just one boy."
I nod at her and she goes back to unpacking her stuff.
I sit on the bed, trying to process the news.
I was so sure that Mateo would be here this summer.
I had all these plans in my head of how I would make him fall for me and now he’s gone.
Veronica notices my crestfallen expression and stops unpacking.
She sits down beside me on the bed, her thigh pressing against mine.
Her hand finds my shoulder and she squeezes it gently.
Her hand stays on my shoulder for a while, her thumb rubbing circles on my skin.
It’s a little longer than necessary but I don’t say anything.
"You know," she whispers, leaning closer to me, "there are other ways to have fun this summer."
Her fingers trail down my arm, raising goosebumps on my skin.
"Veronica, what do you mean by that?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
She smiles softly, her eyes locking onto mine. "I mean, sometimes the best adventures are the ones we least expect."
I swallow hard, feeling a mix of confusion and curiosity. "Are you suggesting something specific?"
