Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

My parents are going out of town for a few days.
They're visiting his sister and their family in New York.
My dad's friend is going to stay here while they're away.
I'm not sure what she looks like, but mom said her hair was blue, so I should be able to recognize her.
"Christine, Mateo is waiting for you," my mom says, coming into my room.
"I'm coming mom," I tell her, saving my game before shutting it off.
I follow her down the hall to the front door where my dad is waiting with his bags by his side.
He has a small smile on his face as he looks at me.
"Hey kiddo," he tells me, pulling me into a hug.
"I love you," he whispers in my ear.
"I love you too dad," I say as he kisses my forehead.
I watch from the window as a woman with electric blue hair walks up our driveway, her heels clicking against the concrete.
She carries a designer handbag and pulls a sleek black suitcase behind her.
This must be Veronica.
My dad mentioned she works in fashion, which explains the fitted blazer and pencil skirt.
She pauses at our front door, checking her reflection in her phone screen and adjusting her hair.
The doorbell chimes.
I walk to the door, my hand on the doorknob.
I'm not sure why I'm nervous about spending a few days alone with this stranger.
But as I open the door, I realize it's not her that I'm nervous about.
She circles the living room, trailing her fingers along the furniture and inspecting every corner.
Her eyes linger on the family photos hanging on the wall, pausing for a moment on one where Dad has his arm around me at my high school graduation.
Her eyes narrow slightly before she turns back with that same teasing smile.
She pats the spot next to her on the couch.
"Come sit with me," she says, beckoning me over.
I hesitate before perching on the opposite end of the couch.
She slides closer, her thigh brushing mine as she leans in.
