Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

I watched as my parents said their goodbyes before getting into the taxi that would take them to the airport.
My heart felt a little heavier when...
"Nicolette, don’t forget to give Christine her medication," my dad, Mateo Windsor, reminded.
Veronica nodded.
"Don’t worry. I got this."
My dad frowned but seemed to trust her word.
He looked back at me one last time before they left.
My parents had decided to leave me in the care of their friend Veronica, since I couldn’t go with them on this vacation.
They would be gone for two weeks in Italy.
My mom had been planning this trip for a while now, and I was the one who had begged them to let me stay here.
I didn’t want to be dragged around for two weeks in a foreign country; I would much rather stay here and do what I liked to do.
However, it was the first time they would be away from me for such a long time, so they were taking their time saying their goodbyes.
Once they were gone, I turned my attention to Veronica.
She stood on our front porch, watching as the taxi drove away.
I moved to stand beside her.
The morning sun was already warm, and I shifted my weight, trying to sneak glances at Veronica’s profile.
She was a beautiful woman with bright blue hair that was tied in a bun on top of her head.
Her tank top was black, and she wore leggings that were a little too short for her legs.
Her gaze stayed fixed on the street as she drummed her fingers on the porch railing.
The taxi turned the corner, and when it was no longer in sight, she straightened up and stretched.
Her tank top rode up, revealing a strip of skin above her leggings before it fell back down.
My eyes darted away before they could linger there any longer.
I cleared my throat and forced a smile, hoping to break the awkward silence between us.
Veronica turned to me with that knowing smirk that made me blush every time I saw it.
"Ready for an adventure of our own?" she asked, her eyes glinting with mischief.
I fidgeted with my phone, not sure what to say.
Veronica was a friend of my mom’s, and she had been given the task of house-sitting while my parents were away.
Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone in the house.
Not that I would do anything to break their trust, but I knew they worried about me.
I had always been a little shy and introverted, and I preferred to stay indoors reading or watching movies.
I was also a bit clumsy, so I was prone to accidents.
My parents had always been protective of me, and it was nice to have someone else around for a change.
"Want to go downtown?"
Veronica asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
I nodded eagerly.
"Sure. There’s a new café that just opened up. We could go there."
Her eyes lit up at my suggestion, and she nodded enthusiastically.
"Sounds perfect."
She went inside the house before returning with her purse slung over her shoulder and her car keys in hand.
"I’ll drive us," she said, dangling the keys in front of me.
"I don’t think we should walk all the way there."
I nodded again, feeling a little shy as I followed her out the door.
Veronica locked the door behind us and then placed her hand on my lower back as we walked down the front steps.
The touch sent shivers down my spine, and I stumbled slightly on the front step. Veronica steadied me with a firm grip on my arm, and I felt her fingers dig into my skin as she held me upright.
"Easy there," she said with a chuckle.
"You okay?"
I nodded quickly, feeling my cheeks heat up as I regained my footing.
Veronica released her grip on my arm but kept her hand on my lower back as we walked toward her car parked in our driveway.
It was a sleek red convertible that gleamed in the sunlight.
Veronica unlocked it and then gestured for me to get into the passenger seat.
I did as she said, buckling myself in before she got into the driver’s seat beside me.
She started the engine and then drove off slowly, turning down the street toward downtown.
As we drove, Veronica turned on some music that filled the car with upbeat tunes that made me tap my foot along with the rhythm. After a while, Veronica pulled into an empty parking spot right in front of the café I had suggested we visit.
As we got out of the car, Veronica turned to me with a curious look.
"So, Nicolette, what’s the real reason you didn’t want to go with your parents?" she asked, her voice gentle but probing.
I hesitated, then sighed, "I needed some space to figure things out... about who I am."
Veronica nodded, then gestured for me to follow her into the café.
As we walked through the glass doors, I was greeted by the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee.
It filled my senses and made me feel more awake than I had been all morning.
Veronica led us over to a secluded corner booth, and she slid in beside me instead of sitting across from me like I had expected.
I looked at her uncertainly, but she just winked and leaned in closer to me.
When the waiter came over to take our order, Veronica smiled up at him and ordered for both of us.
"A caramel latte for myself, and a hot chocolate for my friend," she said, remembering that I didn’t drink coffee.
The waiter nodded and then left us alone.
Veronica’s thigh pressed against mine under the table, and I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as she leaned in closer to me.
"So," Veronica said, "tell me about your friends. Do you have a boyfriend?"
I stammered through my response, trying to keep my eyes on her face as she twirled a strand of her blue hair around her finger. The drinks arrived after a few minutes, and Veronica insisted on holding the hot chocolate to my lips herself.
Her eyes met mine as I took a tentative sip of the sweet liquid.
