Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you later, sweetie," my mom said as she gave me one last hug before they left.
"Have fun with Veronica."
I watched as they drove off into the sunset, heading toward the airport.
They were going to be gone for two weeks.
My dad had some business to take care of, and my mom was tagging along.
They both needed a break, so they decided this would be the perfect time.
They were unable to take me with them, so they asked their friend Veronica to watch over me while they were gone.
I didn’t mind; I was used to being alone.
Veronica was also going to watch over the house.
She had a key and everything.
I trusted her completely; she was a good friend to my mom.
I turned back toward the house after I could no longer see their car on the horizon.
Veronica was already inside, putting away some groceries she had brought over while I said my goodbyes.
"Hey, girl," she said with a smile as I entered the kitchen.
"Did they get off okay?"
"Yeah."I nodded and hopped up onto a barstool.
"They’re going to have so much fun," she sighed with a sigh.
"I wish I could’ve gone."
"You’ll have your fun one day," she said, turning toward me with a smile as she put some meat in the fridge.
"Here, help me finish this."
She handed me a few bags of food and I started putting them away.
Our hands occasionally brushed as we worked, but I didn’t think much of it.
When we were done, she started making dinner.
I could hear her chopping vegetables as I set the table.
The kitchen was soon filled with the smell of whatever she was cooking.
"Can you stir this for me?"
She asked as she stirred a big pot of pasta.
I took the spoon from her hand and started stirring slowly.
"How was school today?"
She asked, turning toward me with a smile.
"It was fine," I said, not really sure what to say.
"Anything exciting happen?"
"Nah."
I shook my head and continued stirring the pasta.
I could feel her eyes on me, but I didn’t look up.
"Well, I’m sure you’ll have some fun while your parents are gone," she said with a smile as she put some bread on the counter. "Yeah."
I nodded and continued stirring the pasta.
The rest of the time before dinner was silent.
Once dinner was ready, we sat down at the table to eat.
Veronica kept looking at me as I took my first bite, but I didn’t say anything about it.
The rest of dinner was silent as well.
I pushed my food around on my plate until Veronica finally spoke up.
"You want to watch a film after dinner?"
"Actually, Veronica, there's something I need to tell you," I said, hesitating slightly.
She looked at me with a curious expression. "What is it, sweetie?"
"I found this letter in my dad's study," I confessed, pulling the crumpled paper from my pocket.
She unfolded the paper and placed it on the kitchen table.
She leaned closer to me, her shoulder pressing against mine as she smoothed out the wrinkles.
The letter was written in black ink, and the words were written in a hurry.
The contents of the letter felt heavy in my hands, and I knew I had to share them with someone.
I cleared my throat and began to read, my voice shaking slightly.
"Dear Christine," Veronica read as she glanced at me briefly.
"Mom and Dad have been acting strange lately. They’ve been having secret meetings with some guy. I don’t know what it’s about, but I overheard them talking about something big happening soon. Dad has been acting suspiciously, always looking over his shoulder. I think he’s scared. He’s also been using a secret bank account to move money around. I found a piece of paper with the account number on it."
Veronica’s grip on the edge of the paper tightened as I continued reading. "He’s been having late-night meetings with this guy," I said, pausing briefly.
"I think it might be connected to the bank account."
Veronica squeezed my hand tighter, her eyes scanning the letter quickly.
"I don’t know who this guy is," I read, feeling a lump form in my throat.
"But I have a bad feeling about it. Please be careful, Christine. I love you."
I stopped reading there, unable to continue.
Veronica looked at me for a moment before her eyes returned to the letter.
She scanned it quickly, stopping at one part that made her intake a breath sharply.
