Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you later, sweetie," my mom said as she gave me one last hug before they left.
"Have fun with Veronica."
I nodded and watched as they got into their SUV and drove off.
They were going on vacation for a few days.
Just the two of them.
My dad turned to me right before they drove off and said, "Be good. If you need anything, call me."
I smiled and waved, then turned and went inside the house.
Veronica was already in there.
She had come a little early so that she could talk to my mom and get the rest of the details about what she needed to do while she was house sitting for us.
Veronica was a good friend of my mom's.
I didn't know her all that well, but from what I could tell, she seemed nice.
I walked upstairs to my bedroom and could hear her walking around behind me.
I heard her set her suitcase down and then the wheels of it as she moved it around.
I sat on my bed and listened as she went from room to room, humming to herself.
The house seemed different with her in it.
It was a little tense and unfamiliar.
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and sat on my bed, pretending to text someone while I listened to what she was doing.
She went into the guest room across the hall from me, and I heard the zipper of a suitcase.
Then there was the rustling of clothes as she unpacked.
I wondered if she was going to stay in that room or if she would sleep in my parents' room since they were gone.
Her footsteps came closer and closer until they stopped right outside my door.
"Hey, do you mind if I come in?" Veronica asked, her voice gentle but curious.
"Sure," I replied, trying to sound casual as I put my phone down.
She stepped inside and said, "Your mom mentioned something about a hidden key—do you know where it is?"
I got up from my bed and said, "Yeah, it's downstairs."
I squeezed past her in the doorway, trying not to touch her.
She followed close behind me down the hallway, her footsteps matching mine.
When we got downstairs, I went into the kitchen and opened the utility drawer.
Veronica stepped up behind me and leaned over my shoulder.
Her breath was warm on the back of my neck.
She smelled like sweet perfume.
I started to rifle through the drawer, pushing aside batteries, rubber bands, and old receipts.
It was a mess.
I could feel Veronica getting closer and closer until her arm brushed against my chest.
Her hand reached into the drawer and touched mine as she started to search for the key too.
"Found it," she said, her fingers curling around the small metal key.
I looked at her, surprised, and asked, "How did you know it would be in there?"
She smiled slightly and replied, "Your mom told me to keep an eye on you—and everything else."
