Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

My parents are going out of town for a few days.
They're leaving me in the care of their friend Veronica.
I've never met her before, but my mom says she's cool and will make sure that I don't get into any trouble while they're away.
I can't wait to meet her.
I'm a little curious about why she has blue hair, though.
Maybe it's just the light playing off the photo, but it looks really blue.
Like cartoon blue.
I wonder if it's natural or if she dyes it that color.
"Christine, come say goodbye before we leave," my mom calls from downstairs.
I grab my backpack and head out into the hallway.
My room is finally clean.
It only took me four hours, but I got it done.
I hurry downstairs to where my parents are waiting by the front door.
"Here we go," my mom says as she hands me a set of keys.
"What are these?"
I ask as I turn them over in my hand.
They're attached to a keychain with a rabbit wearing glasses and his paws clasped together in prayer.
I take a closer look at the keys.
There are a few scratches on the metal, and the address tag is faded.
It looks like it's been used a lot.
"Those are the house keys," my mom explains.
"You'll need them to get in and out of the house while we're away."
I nod and turn to put them in my backpack, but before I can, Veronica steps forward and reaches for them.
Her perfume is strong and overpowering.
It makes my eyes water as she gets close to me.
She smells like a combination of vanilla and flowers, but it's too much.
"Let me take those for you," she says as her fingers brush against mine when she takes the keychain from me.
"I live just two blocks away. If you ever need anything, you can come by."
She smiles at me, showing off her white teeth.
"Or if you want, we could go there now."
I hesitate for a moment, unsure of what to say.
Veronica is nice, but I don't know her that well yet.
I'm not sure if I want to go to her house. "We have video games and a home theater," she adds when she sees my hesitation.
"We could watch movies all day if you want."
"Christine, don't forget about the rules of the house," my mom says as she steps forward to hug me goodbye.
"You know what they are."
"Yes, ma'am," I reply as I return her hug.
My mom pulls back and smiles at me before turning to Veronica.
"Take care of her for us."
"I will," Veronica replies as she smiles back at my mom.
With that, my parents head out the door and down the front steps to their car parked on the street.
They get in and drive away, leaving me alone with Veronica.
She holds up the keychain and dangles it in front of me.
"Christine, there's something I should tell you," Veronica says, her voice suddenly serious.
I look at her curiously, wondering what she could possibly have to say.
"The keys aren't just for the house; they open a secret room your parents never mentioned."
Veronica leads me down the hallway, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.
She traces her fingers along the wall as we walk, stopping at an old painting of a lighthouse near Dad's study.
She tilts her head to the side and smiles knowingly.
I watch as she removes the painting, revealing a keyhole that I've never seen before.
The brass key slides in smoothly, and there's a soft click from inside the wall.
Veronica's eyes meet mine as she pushes against the panel, which swings open to expose a narrow passage.
The air that wafts out is musty and smells like old wood.
