Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

I watched as my parents said their goodbyes before getting into the taxi that would take them to the airport.
My heart felt a little heavier when...
"You ready for this, kiddo?"
Dad asked.
I nodded, trying to keep the sadness from my voice when I spoke when I turned back to look at him.
"Yeah."
They'd decided to leave me with their friend Veronica while they went on their vacation.
It was two weeks, something they'd been planning for ages, and it had finally come around.
My mom, Nicolette, turned back to look at me once more before the taxi drove away.
I waved goodbye even though they couldn't see me.
With one last look, I turned and walked back inside the house and straight into the kitchen where I'd last seen Veronica.
She was standing by the counter, a glass of wine in her hand, and a bun in her hair that showed off her striking blue hair.
I leaned against the counter and watched her sip her wine.
She must have noticed me standing there because she turned to look at me.
She stared at me for a moment before setting her glass down on the counter with a deliberate movement.
I crossed my arms over my chest and waited, not sure what I was waiting for but I knew it would come soon.
"So you're really here to babysit me?"
I asked, unable to keep the edge from my voice.
Her smile widened as she stepped closer, her tank top riding up slightly and showing off smooth skin.
"Oh honey," she purred, "I'm here to keep you company. Your parents just want you safe."
She reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, making me flinch.
"Safe from what?" I challenged, my curiosity piqued.
Veronica's eyes flickered with something unreadable before she replied, "From the truth about why they really left."
I blinked, caught off guard, and asked, "What truth?"
Veronica turned back to the counter and picked up her wine glass.
"Come sit with me."
She gestured to the living room.
I followed, watching her hips sway as she walked.
She set her wine glass down on the coffee table before taking a seat on the couch.
"Sit with me," she patted the cushion next to her, "We'll talk about it."
I hesitated for a moment before taking a seat next to her.
The couch was large, so I sat on the far end, keeping my distance from Veronica.
She looked at me from where she sat with one leg crossed over the other, making sure to show off more of her thighs than I needed to see.
Her eyes narrowed as she stared at me.
Then, in one smooth movement, she closed the distance between us and settled next to me.
She leaned against me, her thigh touching mine as she reached out and wrapped a hand around my arm. "You're a pretty girl," she said quietly, her breath warm against my ear.
I felt my heart rate speed up as she leaned closer.
Her lips brushed against my earlobe, making a shiver run down my spine.
"Your parents think they're protecting you," she whispered, her fingers trailing along my arm in soft caresses, "But there are things about your father you don't know."
I tried to pull away but she grabbed my wrist and pulled me back.
My pulse raced in my veins when I met her gaze again.
There was something dark lurking in those depths that made my skin crawl.
"What is it?"
I asked softly, not wanting to make any sudden movements that might provoke her further.
"Let me show you."
She reached for the remote, and the television flickered to life, revealing a hidden world I never knew existed.
