MidReal Story

Tempted by My Mom’s Friend

Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house. Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much. "Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile. She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink. Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you in two weeks, baby," Dad kissed me on the forehead.
"Take care of yourself and be a good girl with Veronica."
"I will, Dad," I smiled and hugged him.
"Be safe, have a good trip with Mum."
"You too," he kissed me again and turned to leave.
I watched him walk to the taxi standing outside and waited for him to get in before I closed the door and went back inside the house.
Mum had already said her goodbyes and left with Dad.
They're going on a vacation.
I'm 21, so I don't think they need to be worried about leaving me all by myself, but I guess they trust their friend Veronica less.
She's only here to keep an eye on the house since we have a lot of valuable things here.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
I walked to the kitchen counter where my phone was charging.
My fingers hovered over Veronica's contact, which I still have saved from when she used to visit more often.
The kitchen was empty except for the hum of the refrigerator.
I tapped her number and pressed call.
The phone rang as I paced across the tile floor.
One ring.
Two rings.
Three.
Her voicemail kicked in and her sultry voice spoke, "Hello, you've reached Veronica. Leave a message."
I hung up and checked the time - 2:45 PM.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
She said she'd be here by 3.
I turned to the window, watching the clouds gather in the distance.
A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts.
I walked over and opened it, greeted by Veronica's blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that were too small for her.
She smiled and said, "Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey."
I stepped aside as she entered with her suitcase.
"Hey, Veronica," I replied, closing the door behind her.
"Make yourself at home. You know where your room is?"
"Yeah, honey," she said, glancing around the living room.
"I'll just go unpack."
She headed up the stairs, leaving me alone in the room.
I walked to the kitchen and grabbed a glass from the cabinet.

Opening the freezer, I pulled out an ice cube tray and placed it in the glass.
The cold water dripped down my hand as I headed to the table and sat down.
After taking a sip, I stood up to throw away the ice cube.
It slipped from my fingers and fell to the floor. As I bent down to pick it up, something white caught my eye under the table.
I peered into the darkness under there and saw it - an envelope.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
Reaching beneath the table leg, my fingers brushed against paper.
I pulled it out and saw my name written on it in Dad's handwriting.
Before I could grab it, Veronica's footsteps echoed on the stairs.
I quickly straightened up and left the envelope where it was on the floor.
I leaned against the kitchen counter, trying to act casual.
My eyes darted to the envelope under the table, but I didn't want to grab it in front of Veronica.
She walked closer, her hips swaying with each step.
She reached for a glass from the cabinet, and as she did, she bent down near where the envelope lay.
My heart pounded as I waited for her to pick it up, but instead, she grabbed the ice cube that had fallen on the floor.
"Just cleaning up," I said quickly, moving to throw away the ice cube myself.
Veronica blocked my path, standing close enough that I caught a whiff of her perfume.
"You seem nervous," she observed, her fingers trailing along my arm.
I stepped back, bumping into the kitchen counter.
"I should start dinner."

She moved out of my way, her eyes flicking down toward the floor where the envelope lay hidden.
"I'll go unpack some more."
With that, she walked away, leaving me in the kitchen alone again.
I let out a shaky breath, still thinking about the envelope hidden under the table and Veronica's strange behavior.
After a few minutes of pacing and thinking, I retreated to my bedroom upstairs, closing the door behind me.
My gaze went to my window, and as I stared out into the yard, I noticed Veronica's car trunk still open.
She must have forgotten to shut it.
Wanting to be helpful, I walked downstairs and out into the driveway.
I headed towards her car, intent on closing it for her before she forgot completely.
As I approached, I spotted her suitcase lying open on the backseat. The zipper had torn halfway through, spilling clothes and other things onto the seats.

Curious about why it tore like that, I peered closer.
On top of some shirts was a folded paper with my name written on it - but underneath were stacks of hundred-dollar bills stacked neatly.
They filled up half of her suitcase before being concealed by clothes and other items.
The sight sent a chill down my spine as I tried to understand what was going on.
I crouched down next to the car, unfolding the paper with trembling hands.
The note was typed in a plain font, reading: "Christine Windsor - $50,000 payment upon completion."
I swallowed hard, scanning the rest of the page.
There was only an address and tomorrow's date listed.
A car door slammed nearby, making me jump.
I shoved the paper back into the suitcase hastily, accidentally knocking over one of the stacks of bills in the process.
As I tried to replace them, I heard Veronica calling my name from inside the house.
"Christine, are you out there?" Veronica's voice had an edge to it, almost as if she knew what I was doing.
I quickly zipped up the suitcase and stood, trying to calm my racing heart.
"Yeah, just closing your trunk," I called back, forcing a casual tone into my voice.

I rushed to replace the stacks of money, trying to make them neat again.
My fingers were shaking as I worked.
As I finished, Mrs. Peterson from next door walked up our driveway, still wearing her gardening gloves.
"Need help with that suitcase, dear?" she asked, eyeing me warily.
I slammed the trunk shut, the bang echoing through our quiet street.
"Everything okay?"
Mrs. Peterson asked, frowning at my flushed face.
Before I could answer, Veronica appeared behind me, her hand resting firmly on my shoulder.
"Just helping Christine with my luggage," she said smoothly.
Mrs. Peterson lingered for a moment, her eyes darting between us before nodding and walking back down our driveway toward her house.

"Let's go inside, shall we?" said Veronica, her voice dripping with sweetness.
I nodded and followed her back into the house, my mind reeling with questions.
Once inside, I headed into the kitchen to make a cup of tea, trying to calm myself down.
Veronica followed me, closing the door behind us with a soft click.
She leaned against the counter, blocking my exit.
I fumbled with the kettle, trying to hide my shaking hands.
As I turned to put the kettle on the stove, I realized Veronica was still standing there, watching me intently.
I tried to squeeze past her but she caught my wrist, holding it firmly in hers.
Her grip wasn't painful but it sent another chill through me as I remembered the money and note.
Her blue hair fell loose from its bun as she tilted her head, studying my face.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
"Christine, you weren't supposed to see that," she said softly, her eyes searching mine.
"What is this about, Veronica?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"It's complicated, but I need you to trust me," she replied, releasing my wrist and stepping back.
