Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

"See you in two weeks, baby girl," Mom kissed the back of my hand before she gave me one last hug.
"Take care of yourself and be good," she whispered in my ear.
"Daddy."
I hugged his neck, feeling a little sad they’re going to leave me behind but also happy that they will have some time together just the two of them.
"I’ll be back before you know it, kiddo," he said, kissing the back of my hand and ruffled my hair.
My parents are going on a vacation to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.
I was looking forward to going with them at first, but when I got into the university, all of my plans changed.
I was no longer able to go with them because most of the classes I wanted to take started earlier than I expected.
So I told them to go ahead and go on without me.
They were sad about it at first, but they understood my reasons and were okay with it eventually.
They asked their friend to come and watch their house for them while they’re away, since I would no longer be here.
Veronica is my mom’s best friend.
She’s a free spirit and is always doing things that surprise people.
She has tattoos, piercings, and dyes her hair in different colors.
The last time I saw her was when she dyed her hair blue.
She has a lot of boyfriends and has been known to sleep with some of the men in town who are married.
I’ve heard rumors that she has also slept with some of my dad’s friends when they were over for parties at our house.
My parents have always been friends with her, but they have never trusted her around me or my dad when Mom was not around.
They told me that I’m not allowed to go anywhere without them while they’re away, and I have to stay in the house unless Veronica is with me.
I closed the door behind Veronica and walked to the kitchen to make us some coffee.
"Nice house you have here," she said, looking around the living room as she followed me into the kitchen.
I ignored what she said and continued to make coffee.
The coffee maker gurgled as I scooped dark roasted grounds into the filter.
I had no idea how long she was going to be here, but I hoped it wasn’t too long. "You’re not very talkative, are you?" she asked as I poured water into the coffee maker.
She stood next to me with her heels clicking on the tile floor as she watched me work.
The smell of coffee filled the kitchen as it brewed in the pot.
I grabbed two mugs from the cabinet and set them on the counter next to where I was standing.
Veronica moved closer to me as I reached for the sugar and creamer from the pantry.
Her arm brushed against mine as she reached past me for the sugar, causing my heart to race at her touch.
I poured the coffee into both mugs, my hands shaking slightly as I handed hers over to her across the counter.
Veronica took a sip, her eyes never leaving mine, and smiled with a knowing glint that made me question everything I thought I knew about this summer.
I turned back to the counter and busied myself cleaning up the mess I made while making coffee.
Veronica leaned against the fridge, watching me with that same smile on her face.
She drummed her fingers on the stainless steel, creating a rhythm that made it hard for me to focus on what I was doing.
"You know what?" she said, pulling her car keys out of her purse.
"This house is too stuffy. Let’s go for a drive."
I shook my head.
My parents told me to stay in the house unless Veronica was with me.
"I don’t think that’s a good idea," I said, but she just smiled and walked over to me.
Her perfume was strong and filled my nose as she stopped in front of me.
"Come on. Your parents asked me to look after you, right? So you’ll be safe with me."
She placed her hand on my shoulder and squeezed. "It’ll be a quick afternoon trip. I know this amazing little cafe by the beach. We can stop there and get some lunch."
I hesitated, glancing at the clock on the wall.
"Are you sure it's okay? I mean, what if they call and I'm not here?"
Veronica chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Trust me, they won't mind as long as you're with me. Besides, there's something I need to tell you about your dad."
