Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house.
Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much.
"Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile.
She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink.
Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

I watched as my parents hugged me goodbye before they got into the taxi that would take them to the airport.
My mom planted extra kisses on my forehead and cheeks.
"I’m going to miss you so much," she whispered in my ear.
I smiled, feeling a little warm inside.
I loved it when they showed me affection.
"I’m going to miss you too," I whispered back.
My dad kissed the top of my head before he gave me a hug.
"Take good care of yourself, okay?" he said.
"I will, Dad."
Veronica, the friend they left me with, waved goodbye at them from where she stood by her car.
My parents waved back at her before they got into the taxi.
Once they were gone, I turned to look at Veronica.
She was a striking beauty with blue hair in a bun and a collection of tattoos on her arms.
I followed Veronica as she walked into the house, her suitcase behind her.
She went straight to the guest room, and I stood in the doorway as she unpacked.
She pulled out a black bikini from her suitcase and held it up with a smile.
"Maybe you’ll get to see this later," she said, dangling the bikini in front of me.
My throat felt dry as she hung it on the hook behind the door.
"We should go cool off by the pool," she suggested, looking at me.
"I don’t know. Dad said not to swim alone."
Veronica snorted.
"You’re not alone. I’m here. And I’m sure you have a floatie if you don’t know how to swim."
"I do know how to swim," I said quickly, my cheeks heating up.
"Then let’s go. I need to relax."
Veronica went into the bathroom to change.
I went into my own room and sat on the edge of my bed, fidgeting with the hem of my t-shirt as I waited for Veronica.
When she came out of the bathroom, her pale skin was stark against the black bikini.
I watched as she strutted past me toward the backyard, her long legs looking longer than usual in high heels. At the sliding glass door, she stopped and turned back to me.
"Are you coming, or are you just going to sit there all day?"
I watched as she walked across the backyard toward the pool, her blue hair catching the sunlight.
My heart was beating fast as I wondered if I should follow her.
Dad had told me not to swim alone, but Veronica was with me.
I gripped the windowsill and looked out at her.
Veronica stopped at the side of the pool and looked back at me.
She gestured for me to come over, then winked.
I jumped when I heard splashing from the pool.
I turned back to the window, and my breath caught in my throat when I saw Veronica floating on her back in the water.
The black bikini stood out starkly against the blue pool water.
I fumbled with the door handle and went outside.
The sun beat down on my skin as I stepped onto the warm concrete of the pool deck.
Veronica’s eyes locked onto mine, and she smiled lazily at me. "Come on in," she said, waving a hand at me.
I took small steps toward her, feeling shy but also excited.
As I reached the edge of the pool, I knew everything was about to change.
