MidReal Story

Tempted by My Mom’s Friend

Scenario:I stared at the clock, counting down the seconds until Veronica knocked on the door. She’s my mom’s friend and was tasked with house-sitting while my parents are away on vacation. Apparently, they didn’t trust me to be alone at the house. Finally, I heard the knock. Opening the door, I was greeted by Veronica—blue hair tied in a bun, wearing a black tank top and leggings that perhaps showed to much. "Heyyyy! Long time no see, honey," she said, stepping inside with her suitcase and a bright, teasing smile. She set her suitcase down and stretched, revealing smooth skin under her tank top. "Looks like we’ll be alone together for a while," she added with a wink. Her gaze shifted toward the backyard. "I heard you have a pool... Maybe I'll let you watch as I swim with my bikini on."

I watch as my parents finish packing, double and triple checking that they have all the things they need for their vacation.
"Mom, you already checked the bag five times," I point out.
"I’m going to check it one more time, just to be sure," she says, ignoring me and sending me to load the dishwasher instead.
With a sigh, I walk into the kitchen and start loading the dishes.
I don’t really understand why they are being so weird about leaving.
My mom had asked her friend Veronica to come stay with me while they are away, and Dad had agreed without even talking to her.
Veronica is currently sitting on the couch in the living room, reading a book.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
I finish loading the dishwasher and head back out into the hallway.
My dad is carrying the last suitcase out to the car.
My mom is fussing with her purse, trying to get everything to fit.
She looks up at me as I approach, and pulls me into a tight hug.
"Be good for Veronica," she whispers.
I nod, and she releases me.
She follows my dad out the door, and I watch through the window as they get in the car and drive away.
I watch until their car disappears around the corner, then turn back to face the house.
It seems quieter now that they are gone, emptier.
My feet drag on the carpet as I walk toward the living room.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
"Hey, Veronica," I say, trying to sound casual.
She looks up from her book, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
"You know, your parents didn't just ask me to stay because they were worried about you being alone."
I shrug, and sit down on the couch across from her.
I don’t really know what to say, so I just sit there, awkwardly.
Veronica goes back to reading her book, occasionally glancing up at me.
The silence between us is heavy, thick.
She shifts in her seat, crossing her legs and uncrossing them, drawing my attention to the smooth skin of her thighs.
I try to look away, but can’t quite manage it.
"Christine," she says, clearing her throat.
I jerk my gaze up to meet hers.
She sets her book down on the coffee table and stands up, walking over to sit beside me on the couch.
Her thigh touches mine as she sits down, sending a shiver through me.

"There's something you need to know," Veronica says, her voice low and serious.
I blink, caught off guard by the sudden change in her tone.
"Your parents asked me to stay because they wanted me to tell you about your real family."
I shift uncomfortably, my thigh pressing harder against Veronica’s.
She places a hand on my knee, her fingers sending electricity through me.
I try to focus on what she is saying, but it’s hard with her so close.
"Your parents adopted you when you were a baby," she says, her voice soft and gentle.
"My best friend was your birth mother. She died in a car accident, and I promised her I would make sure you knew the truth."
Her hand tightens on my knee, and I feel a lump form in my throat.
I swallow hard, trying to push the emotions down.
"I don’t understand," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.
Veronica nods, her blue hair falling loose from its bun.
She reaches up to brush it out of her face, and I catch a glimpse of her smooth neck.

"She was my best friend," she repeats, her voice filled with sadness.
"She died when you were just a baby. Your father was killed in the accident too."
Veronica’s fingers trace circles on my knee as she speaks.
I try to focus on what she is saying, but it’s hard with her so close to me.
My breath catches as she leans in closer, her blue hair falling loose around us. "Do you want to know more about your birth mother?" she asks, her lips brushing against my ear.
Tempted by My Mom’s Friend
I nod silently, unable to speak.
"I'm sorry to drop this on you so suddenly," Veronica continues, her eyes searching mine for understanding.
"I promised myself I would tell you when the time was right, and your parents thought now was that time."
I take a deep breath, trying to process everything, and ask, "So... what happens now?"
