Caroline attends a prestigious all girls school. She has joined the rowing team. She is 5'5". She has blonde wavy hair and expressive blue eyes. Her petite frame has long limbs. So far the thing that has made winter training enjoyable I'd her coach, Tom. The entire team has just finished school and are boarding a bus. Everyone dressed in their green kilts. They are headed for a 14 hour ride south for a 10 day training camp. Excitement is high.
It was a cold and grey afternoon in December when we boarded the bus.
The entire girls' school was there to see us off, standing on the sidewalk in their green kilts, waving and cheering as we climbed the steps.
The rowing team had just finished exams and were heading out on a 14 hour ride to a remote location 500 miles south for 10 days of intensive training.
Our coach, a 61 year old man named Tom, stood at the front of the bus, smiling and waving at the crowd.
He was our coach, but more than that he was a dedicated and inspiring leader who made winter training actually enjoyable.
I had never been much of a athlete, but there was something about rowing that I loved.
Maybe it was the serene beauty of it, or maybe it was the sense of camaraderie that you developed with your crew as you worked together.
As the bus rumbles down the highway, laughter and chatter fill the air, a contagious energy that has me grinning from ear to ear.
I sit by the window, watching the landscape blur by, feeling the vibration of the road beneath us, a gentle hum that seems to match the rhythm of my heartbeat.
Coach Tom stands at the front, his voice booming over the music as he shares stories from past camps, each tale met with cheers and applause from my teammates.
I glance around at their animated faces, their eyes shining with excitement, and can't help but feel a sense of belonging among them.
My teammates exchange snacks and jokes, their energy infectious, and I find myself chuckling along with them, feeling carefree for the first time in weeks.
Sarah, my friend and seatmate, nudges me with her elbow, her eyes bright with anticipation. "Can you believe we're finally doing this?" she whispers, her voice barely audible over the din.
I shake my head, still grinning. "I know, it feels like we've been waiting forever."
The bus hits a bump, jolting us all, and I grip the seat in front of me, steadying myself as the wheels screech in protest.
Coach Tom raises his hands for silence, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Alright, girls! Time for a little team-building exercise."
The bus erupts into cheers and applause once more as Coach Tom pulls out a stack of cards from his pocket. "We're going to play a game of 'Would You Rather'!"
I lean forward, intrigued, as Coach Tom begins to read out the first question. "Would you rather give up your favorite food for a month or be unable to use your phone for a week?"
The bus falls silent, each of us pondering our answer as the landscape whizzes by outside.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoes through the bus, followed by the sound of shattering glass.
