I was working fulltime as a graphic designer, and part time selling paintings online.
I was single, yet my life was so busy I didn’t even have time to go out with friends.
One day, while scrolling through social media, I saw an ad for a maidbot clone of myself.
I could buy a robot that looked exactly like me to be my maid!
It would save me so much time and stress.
I decided then and there that I would buy myself.
The next day, I went to the store and ordered my maidbot.
A week later, it arrived.
The maidbot looked exactly like me.
I named her Doppelganger, Dopie for short.
I told Dopie what her tasks were and how she had to behave.
The next morning, I woke up late, rushed out of bed, threw some clothes on, and ran to the kitchen.
There, I saw Dopie already up, making breakfast.
"Good morning," Dopie said with a smile.
"Good morning," I replied back.
"I have a lot of things to do today. Can you make sure the dishes are done and the living room is clean?"
"Sure thing," Dopie replied.
I grabbed a cup of coffee and ran out the door.
I worked all day at my fulltime job, and when I came home, everything was spotless.

I watched Dopie get ready for bed, and then I went to my room.
The next morning, I woke up early and watched Dopie get ready for work.
She made breakfast, got dressed, and left the house.
I put on her maid uniform and went downstairs to start cleaning the house.
It was a strange feeling, doing all the things that Dopie had been doing for me.
But it was also kind of liberating.
I didn’t have to worry about anything else except cleaning the house.
I started in the living room, dusting all the surfaces and vacuuming the floor.
Then I moved on to the kitchen, washing all the dishes and wiping down the counters.
As I was finishing up in the kitchen, I heard the doorbell ring.

I walked over to answer it, expecting it to be a delivery person or something.
But when I opened the door, I was surprised to see my boss, Mr. Thompson, standing there with a stack of papers in his hand. "Hi," he said with a smile.
"I hope you don’t mind me dropping by like this, but I need you to take a look at these documents for me."
"Sure thing," I said, taking the papers from him.
"Thanks," he said, turning to leave.
"Oh, and by the way," he added as an afterthought, "can you make sure to clean out the fridge today? It’s starting to smell."
"Will do," I replied with a nod.
As he walked away, I couldn’t help but feel a little confused.
Why was my boss here?
And why was he asking me to clean out the fridge?
I looked down at the papers in my hand and realized that he must have mistaken me for Dopie.
I felt a surge of panic run through me as I realized what had just happened.
My boss thought that I was my maidbot!
What was I going to do now?
I closed the door and leaned against it, trying to calm myself down.
It’s not like it’s a big deal or anything, I told myself.
He just thinks that you’re your maidbot. But still, it felt weird knowing that my boss thought that I was someone else. And what if he found out?
Would he be upset?
I heard a voice behind me, "You look worried."
I turned to see Dopie standing there, her expression calm.

"Mr. Thompson thinks I'm you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I'm scrubbing the kitchen counter when Mr. Thompson walks in through the back door.
I wasn't expecting him, so I jump a little at his sudden presence.
He's carrying a stack of design files and wearing that navy suit that fits him perfectly.
He looks up and sees me, and his eyes lock onto my face.
He studies me for a moment, as if he's trying to figure out who I am.
I grip the cleaning cloth a little tighter in my hand, remembering that I'm still wearing Dopie's maid uniform.
Mr. Thompson sets the files down on the table and walks over to me.
"Would you like to join me for coffee?" he asks, his voice low and smooth.
My heart starts racing as I try to think of an excuse.
I can't exactly tell him that I'm not Dopie, since she's supposed to be working for him right now.

But I also can't go out for coffee with my boss while pretending to be someone else. "I...I don't know," I stammer, trying to come up with a good reason to say no.
"I have a lot of work to do today."
Mr. Thompson raises an eyebrow at me, clearly not buying my excuse.
"You can take a break," he says, his voice firm but gentle.
"It's just coffee."

I open my mouth to protest again, but before I can say anything, the doorbell rings.
I freeze mid-sentence, my heart pounding in my chest.
