I stared at my phone, reading the text over three times before I finally comprehended what it said.
When I still couldn't wrap my head around it, I looked at the top of the screen again, just to make sure it wasn't a guy friend inviting me to a party.
It was Mia.
As in, Mia, one of my female friends.
And she was inviting me to a girls' night.
I swiped through the texts again, finding the first one she sent me.
Mia: Hey!
My mom is going out of town for the weekend and I was thinking about having a party.
I wanted to invite you, but I should warn you…it’s a swimsuit party.
Girls’ night.
Basically, you’ll be the only dude there.
I read her next text to see if she had changed her mind…
Mia: Never mind.
I wasn't sure if I should be relieved or disappointed.

Mia: Never mind!
I was thinking it might be weird for you, so I decided not to invite you.
But then I thought about it some more and decided that would be stupid.
You're my friend and you should come.
It'll be fun, I promise.
I pulled up the messaging app and stared at the keyboard, my thumb hovering over it as I debated how to respond.
I typed out three different texts before finally settling on the one that seemed the least likely to offend her.
Me: Hey, just checking - did you mean to invite me to your girls’ night?
I set my phone down on the bed and paced around my room while I waited for her response.
Every few seconds, I glanced at my phone, willing the screen to light up with her answer.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it did. Mia: Yeah!
Like I said, I'm just worried that it might be weird for you…that you might feel uncomfortable or something.
I typed out a response and then immediately deleted it.
My second attempt didn't go much better.
I wanted to tell her that it wasn't a big deal, but at the same time, I didn't want to make her feel bad if she was trying to be considerate of me.
Finally, on my third try, I managed to type out something coherent.
Me: Yeah, maybe a little bit.
I mean, you guys are all going to be in swimsuits and stuff…and I'm just going to be standing around in board shorts?
I was hoping she would get it without me having to spell it out for her, but Mia had always been a girl who appreciated honesty and straightforwardness. Mia: Yeah…I can see how that would be weird for you.
I didn't want to say anything else, but my fingers seemed to have a mind of their own when they typed out my next message.

Me: Plus…it's not like there's going to be any other dudes there for me to hang out with.
It was probably a rude thing to say, but Mia knew me well enough that she should have known I wasn't trying to offend her or anything.
She responded a few minutes later with a text so long that it spilled over into two separate messages on my screen.
Mia: Yeah…about that…I was thinking maybe you could make the party more interesting?
I sat on my bed, staring at my phone as I tried to figure out what she was getting at.
I could see that she was typing something else, because the three dots were flashing in our chat window.
Then they stopped, and a few seconds later they started again.
It was like she was trying to decide what to say, then stopping and starting over.
Finally, after a few minutes of this, the dots stopped flashing and a message appeared on my screen.
Mia: Look…I know this is going to sound weird…but I was thinking maybe you could be the entertainment?
I stared at the screen for a long time before I finally worked up the nerve to respond.
Me: Okay…what did you have in mind?
I knew I should have just told her no, but I couldn't help feeling curious about what she had planned.
Mia: Nothing too crazy!
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
Just some stuff that will make things more interesting for everyone else. I took a deep breath and typed out my response.
Me: Okay…but only if you agree to a few things.
The typing indicator flashed on my screen again, and Mia responded almost immediately.
Mia: Deal!
What are your conditions?
I took another deep breath before typing out my response.
Me: First…the party has to be just like any other party.
No one can know what's going on or anything.
Second…I get to decide what happens and when.
And third…I get to stop whenever I want.
I hit send and waited for Mia's response.
My heart was pounding in my chest, and for a second I wondered if I had made a huge mistake by agreeing to this thing.
The typing indicator flashed on my screen again, and Mia's response popped up a second later. Mia: Deal!
But only if you agree to wear those blue board shorts I got you for your birthday. Those were the ones that were slightly shorter than I liked…the ones that showed off more of my legs than I was comfortable with.
Mia: Deal! I promise, it'll be just like any other party, and no one will suspect a thing.

Me: Alright, but remember, if things get too weird, I'm out.
Mia: Totally fair, and honestly, I'm just glad you're willing to give it a shot.
