When I got the text from Mia telling me to wear swimwear, I thought nothing of it.
Then again, when I got the initial invitation to this little shindig, I figured it was something I could bring my swimsuit for as well.
After all, she had mentioned the pool would be open.
I didn’t realize until I walked into the house and found myself staring at a sea of women in various states of undress that I had misread the situation entirely.
Mia had sent me the invitation without so much as mentioning it was a girls’ night.
And then she’d sent the text about swimwear, but had never mentioned I would be the only male there.
I hadn’t realized quite how true that statement was until now.
"Mia! Jamie’s here!"
Adrianna Blair called from the living room where she, Mia, and a few other girls were gathered around the coffee table.
Mia turned around with a wine glass in her hand and grinned.
"Come on in, boys!"
She paused after realizing what she’d just said.
"Boy. Come on in."
She motioned me over and I shook my head before walking into the living room.

I shuffled toward the coffee table, my swim trunks feeling a little too tight.
Every female eye in the room was on me.
Adrianna scooted over on the couch, patting the space between her and Mia.
"Come sit down."
I did as she asked, trying to ignore the way the girls in the room watched me.
The scent of perfume and sunscreen hung in the air and I couldn’t help but take a deep breath.
It was intoxicating.
The girls all stopped talking when I sat down, their eyes on me as they waited for me to speak.
I cleared my throat, fidgeting with the hem of my t-shirt.
"So, uh, I guess this is what being a boy band member feels like?"

I looked around at all of them.
I’d meant it as a joke, but no one laughed.
Instead, they all exchanged knowing glances.
Adrianna shifted closer to me on the couch, her shoulder pressing against mine.
"So, Jamie, how long have you and Mia been friends?"
I opened my mouth to answer, but before I could, Sarah called from across the room.
"Hey, girls! Why don’t we head out to the pool?"
The girls all stood up and headed for the door.
Mia grabbed my wrist and held me back until everyone else had filed out of the room.
She looked at me with an unusual amount of seriousness in her eyes.
"I wanted to talk to you about something."

She opened her mouth to continue, but before she could say anything else, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen.
Mia and I both jumped and then froze.
The ceiling fan above us whirred around and around, casting flickering shadows on the walls.
The light from the setting sun was almost completely gone, leaving the room in a dim orange glow.
I instinctively reached out and grabbed Mia’s hand.
She didn’t pull away.
Instead, she squeezed my fingers and stepped closer to me.
The crashing sound grew louder, accompanied by the shattering of glass.
Mia fumbled in her pocket for her phone and pulled it out, clicking on the flashlight app.
The beam of light illuminated the path to the kitchen and we both inched forward, Mia still gripping my hand tightly.
We walked side by side until we reached the kitchen doorway.
I peered around the corner and saw a dark shape moving near the counter.
Mia clicked the flashlight beam to the right, shining it on the wine bottles lined up on the counter.

They were all knocked over, lying in a puddle of red liquid with shards of glass scattered around them. The beam of light flickered across the floor, illuminating more broken glass and then a raccoon standing on its hind legs, rummaging through one of the cabinets.
It froze when it saw us, its eyes glowing back at us like two green embers.
"Well, that's one way to crash a party," I said, trying to lighten the mood.
Mia let out a shaky laugh, her grip on my hand loosening slightly.
"Guess we should've put a lock on the snacks," she replied, her voice still tinged with tension.

I nodded and stepped into the kitchen, Mia following close behind me.
We stood near the window, watching as the raccoon continued to rummage through the cabinets.
I kept an eye on the window, waiting for it to make its escape.
Mia and I worked in tandem, picking up shards of glass and mopping up the red puddles with paper towels.
The raccoon watched us, chittering softly every now and then.
As we worked, our hands touched a few times as we reached for the same piece of glass.
Mia didn’t pull away.
The kitchen felt smaller than usual, the air warmer and more intimate.
Outside, I could hear the splashing of water and the laughter of the girls in the pool.
The raccoon finally scurried out the open window, leaving behind a mess and an unexpected sense of camaraderie.
