My friend Mia invited me to a swimsuit party. But the moment I arrived, I realized something was off. Everywhere I looked, there were only girls—laughing, chatting, and having fun in the pool. And then I realized—I’m the only guy at the party.
Jamie Carter
the only male guest, friends with Mia, average build with short brown hair, curious and slightly awkward.
Adrianna Blair
one of Mia's closest friends at the party, friends with Mia and some of the other guests, petite with curly red hair, witty and protective.
Mia Thompson
host of the party and Jamie's friend, friends with all the guests, tall with long blonde hair, outgoing and confident.
I stared at my phone, reading the text for the fifth time.
Me plus a bunch of girls in swimsuits?
Was I crazy for even considering this?
Mia had sent me the invitation out of the blue.
I hadn’t talked to her in weeks.
But she knew I wouldn’t turn down a party.
The text read:
Hey Jamie!
I’m having a party at my place and I wanted you to come.
It’s a girls’ night, but I know you’re comfortable around them, so you’re invited!
There will be drinks and food.
Feel free to bring someone if you want.
Love you!
P.S. I’ll be using the pool, so if you want to swim, bring a suit!
I typed out a response several times, only to delete it each time.
Finally, I settled on something short and sweet.
Thanks for inviting me!
I’ll come, but I can’t promise I’ll swim.
Love you!
I hit send before I could chicken out.
Twenty minutes later, a response came.
Yay!
I can’t wait!
If you want to swim, just use one of our suits.
See you soon!
P.S. I told the girls you’re coming, and they’re all super excited!
I groaned as I read her response.
I was already sitting in my car, parked outside her house, and I could hear the music thumping against the inside of my window.
Girls in colorful swimsuits were streaming past, giggling and carrying towels.
I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts, looking for someone to help me out of this situation.
My thumb hovered over Mark’s number.
He’d been my best friend since high school.
He was the only person I knew who would bail me out of this kind of situation.
I looked up through the windshield, watching as Adrianna walked out of Mia’s house, her arms crossed across her chest.
She watched me from the front porch, raising an eyebrow.
She tapped her wrist as if to say, "Time’s a ticking!"
I took a deep breath and typed out a quick text to Mark: "Hey man, at this party. It’s weird. Want to save me?"
I put my phone down and got out of the car.
Adrianna watched me as I walked up to the front door.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey," she replied, her voice a little softer than usual.
She turned and walked into the house, and I followed behind her.
We moved through clusters of girls, all chatting and laughing together.
Some of them glanced at me as we passed, but most ignored me.
Adrianna led me into the kitchen, where a table was set up with drinks and snacks.
She handed me a red cup of punch, her eyes darting toward a door near the back stairs.
Two girls were huddled there, talking in hushed tones.
They looked up as we passed, their eyes meeting mine for a moment before they looked away.
I couldn’t place either of them—they must have been friends of Mia’s that I hadn’t met before. "What’s going on?"
I asked Adrianna as we continued on our way to the pool area.
She shrugged and kept walking.
The girls by the stairs were talking again, their voices lower now that we were farther away.
I caught snippets of their conversation as we passed by.
"…initiation…"
"…hidden space…"
I turned to ask Adrianna what they were talking about, but she pulled me along before I could say anything.
We walked through the sliding glass doors and out onto the patio, where Mia was waiting for us by the pool.
She grinned at me as I approached, and I couldn’t help but grin back.
She looked great in her swimsuit—a bright pink bikini that showed off her tan skin to perfection.
"Jamie! So glad you could make it!"
She said, throwing her arms around my neck. "Of course," I replied, hugging her back awkwardly.
"I wouldn’t miss it for the world."
Mia stepped back and grinned at me again.
"I’m so glad you’re here. Let’s get you something to drink."
She reached over and grabbed a red cup from a nearby table, then handed it to me with a smile.
I took a sip of the liquid inside—it was sweet and fruity, with just a hint of something stronger inside.
I glanced over at Adrianna, who was watching me from across the patio with an odd look on her face.
She nodded at me slightly before turning away and heading back inside the house.
I followed her, my head feeling a little lighter than it had been a moment ago.
We moved through the crowded living room, weaving between girls lounging on couches and standing in small clusters.
The music grew muffled as we headed upstairs, passing the two girls who had been whispering in the kitchen.
They were watching us now, their eyes following us as we went by.
My feet were still wet from walking through the pool area, and I left a trail of water marks on the carpet behind me.
Adrianna moved quickly, checking over her shoulder to make sure I was still behind her.
When we reached the second floor, she stopped in front of a closed door and pulled out a small key from her swimsuit top.
She inserted it into a lock I hadn’t noticed before, and there was a soft click as the mechanism opened. She turned to me and gestured for me to go first.
I stepped inside, my eyes adjusting slowly to the darkness of the room beyond.
The door clicked shut behind us, and I realized there was no turning back.
I couldn’t see anything at first, but as my eyes adjusted, I made out shapes around me.
It was some kind of storage room—there were boxes stacked up against the walls, and what looked like a wooden desk in the center.
I stumbled forward, bumping into the desk with my hip.
The drinks from earlier were making my head spin, and I reached out for a nearby shelf to balance myself.
Behind me, Adrianna flipped a switch, bathing the room in a warm glow.
There were candles set up around the walls, and they flickered to life as she turned the knob.
The room was small—maybe 10x10—and the candles made it feel even more cramped.
The walls were covered in strange symbols, drawn in black marker.
They seemed to pulse with a dark energy as I watched, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see the girls from downstairs filing into the room.
They moved silently, their faces blank as they formed a circle around me.
Mia was among them, her usual smile replaced by a hard look in her eyes. "What’s going on?"
I asked Adrianna, but she didn’t answer.
She locked the door behind us and pocketed the key, her eyes never leaving mine.
I felt like I was being trapped here against my will—and that feeling only intensified as I watched the girls move into position around me.
The room seemed to be growing smaller by the second, and my legs felt weak beneath me.
I should have listened to my instincts when I got that first text from Mia.
"Jamie, you need to listen carefully," Adrianna said, her voice steady but urgent.
"This isn't just a party; it's a test," Mia added, stepping closer with a seriousness that made my heart race.
"The symbols on the walls—they're part of an ancient ritual, and you're the key to unlocking it."
I leaned against the desk for support, my head spinning.
The drinks from earlier were making it hard to focus, and I struggled to make out the faces of the girls around me.
They were all staring at me, their eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl.
"Jamie," Mia said, her voice growing louder.
"We need you to focus. We're going to perform a ritual that will unlock your true potential. Are you ready?"
I didn’t know what to say.
The room was growing more and more crowded by the second, and I felt like I was trapped in some kind of nightmare.
I looked around at the girls, but they just stared back at me with blank faces.
"Jamie," Mia said again, her voice growing more insistent.
"Are you ready?"
I shook my head, trying to clear the cobwebs.
"I don't know," I said finally.
"I don't understand what's going on."
Mia stepped forward, holding an old leather-bound book in her hands.
"It's simple," she said, her voice growing more urgent.
"We're going to perform a ritual that will unlock your true potential. It's going to be okay."
Adrianna moved closer, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"You're going to be fine," she said softly.
"Just trust us."
I looked around at the girls, their faces still blank and serious.
I felt like I was being pulled into some kind of trap—and I didn’t know how to escape. The girls started chanting in a language I didn’t understand, their voices growing louder and more urgent.
The room seemed to be shrinking around me, and I felt like I was trapped in some kind of nightmare.
Mia held up the book, her eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my heart race.
The symbols on the walls seemed to pulse with a dark energy as she began reading from the pages.
The air grew colder around me, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
Suddenly, the candle flames stretched upward, reaching impossibly tall heights that seemed to touch the ceiling above us.
The shadows on the walls began twisting and writhing like living things, as if they were alive and reacting to whatever Mia was reading from the book.
