I stared at my phone, reading the text for the fifth time, still not believing what it said.
Me, Jamie Carter, going to an all-girls' party?
It just didn't seem right.
Yet, here I was, holding an invitation from none other than Mia Thompson herself.
Mia and I had been friends for a couple of weeks now.
We met on the bus, and we had a lot in common.
I was happy to have her as a friend, but I still didn't know if I could do this.
A swimsuit party?
I was the only guy?
What if the other girls didn't want me there?
I decided I would talk to Mia about it before I made my final decision.
Jumping into my car, I drove the twenty-minute drive to her house.
When I arrived, she answered the door with a huge smile on her face.
"Hey!"
"Hey!"
I replied, stepping out of my car and walking toward her.
"What's up?"
"What are you doing here?"
She asked, looking at me in surprise.
"I got your invite," I said, holding up my phone.
"Oh," she replied, pushing through the door and shutting it behind her.

"I just wanted to talk to you about it," I said, shifting my weight from one foot to the other.
She leaned against the door frame, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Okay. What do you want to talk about?"
She asked, her face unreadable.
I could hear girls laughing inside the house and the music playing in the background.
I shifted again, this time looking around her front porch.
I could hear the sound of the pool splashing and more laughter coming from around back.
"Are you sure you want me to come? I mean, it's an all-girls' party."
"Yeah, why not? We're all friends now."
She said with a shrug of her shoulders.

I nodded, looking up at the sky.
"Okay then."
I turned to go, but before I did, I heard her voice behind me.
"Hey Jamie."
Turning back around, I looked at her, wondering if she had changed her mind already.
She was leaning against the door frame, watching me with a smile on her face.
She was wearing a black bikini and shorts on over top of them.
Her long blonde hair hung down around her shoulders in waves.
She had a towel hanging over one arm and sunglasses perched on top of her head.
She was beautiful.
I couldn't deny that. "Yeah?"
I asked, standing there in silence for a moment.
She looked behind me before looking back at me again.
"You going to come in?"
"Sure," I replied with a shrug of my shoulders and followed her through the door into the house.

Inside, there were girls everywhere—laughing, chatting, and having fun in the pool out back.
Mia led me through the living room into the kitchen where there was a table full of snacks set up for us to grab whenever we wanted to eat or drink something.
We stood there for a few minutes talking and laughing with some of Mia's friends before she leaned over to me and whispered in my ear that she would be right back and disappeared through a doorway into what I assumed was her bedroom since it was located right off the kitchen area of the house. Standing there in silence for a few moments, I watched as girls came and went from grabbing food or drinks from the table next to me or walking through heading out back to the pool area.
I glanced up at one of the windows that faced toward Mia's bedroom and saw Adrianna standing there watching us.
I stood awkwardly by the kitchen counter, watching her.
She was perched on the edge of the pool, her red curls hanging down her back, dripping water onto her shoulders.
She was wearing a blue swimsuit that showed off every curve of her body.
I raised my hand in a wave, not knowing what else to do.
She looked at me for a moment before nodding her head in response and turning back around.
The two girls standing next to me were talking about their summer plans.
One was named Sarah, and I thought the other one was Katie.
I wasn't sure though because Mia hadn't introduced us to each other yet.
"Did you guys go to the music festival last year?"
Sarah asked, looking at Katie with a smile on her face.

"No," she replied, shaking her head.
"I wanted to go, but my parents said no. How about you?"
"Yeah, I did," Sarah replied with a smile on her face.
"It was so much fun."
I cleared my throat, trying to get their attention. "Excuse me," I said, looking between the two of them.
They turned and looked at me for a moment before nodding their heads in acknowledgement.
"Do you guys go to school here?"
Sarah asked, looking at me curiously.
"Yeah," I replied with a nod of my head.
"Did you go to the music festival last year?"
Katie asked, looking at me with a smile on her face.
"Yeah," I replied with a nod of my head again.
"That's so cool. Did you have fun?"
She asked, leaning toward me eagerly.
"Yeah, it was great," I replied with a smile on my face.
"What was your favorite band?"
Sarah asked, looking at me with excitement in her eyes.
"Um," I replied, thinking for a moment before answering.
"I guess it would have to be The Killers."
"Oh yeah! They're awesome!"
Katie replied with a smile on her face.
"I love them. Did you see them play live?"
"Yeah," I replied with a nod of my head again.
"That's so cool! Did they sound good?"
She asked excitedly.
"Yeah, they did," I replied with a smile on my face again. "Oh yeah! They are coming back this year! We should totally go see them!"
Sarah exclaimed excitedly.
"That sounds like fun," I said with a smile on my face again.
"Actually, there's something I need to tell you both," I said, taking a deep breath.
Katie glanced at Sarah before turning her attention back to me. "What is it?"

I hesitated for a moment, then decided to just say it. "Mia invited me here because she thinks I'm the one who can help with the surprise performance tonight."
I leaned back against the kitchen counter, watching their reactions.
Sarah clapped her hands together excitedly while Katie pulled her phone out of her pocket to check the time.
"It's almost eight," she said, glancing up at me through her eyelashes.
I could see more girls gathering around the pool through the sliding glass door.
Some of them were wrapping themselves in towels as the air started to cool down now that the sun was going down.
Mia walked back into the kitchen with a small speaker in her hand.
She caught my eye, giving me a knowing look before setting it down on the patio table.
She scrolled through her playlist before finding what she wanted.
The girls started moving closer, forming a loose circle around the pool.
I took a deep breath, knowing this was my moment to step forward and make it unforgettable.

I moved toward the patio door, grabbing my laptop bag that I had stashed behind the kitchen counter earlier.
The girls watched me curiously as I set it down next to Mia's speaker, plugging in the cables and setting up my equipment.
My hands shook slightly as I plugged in the final cord.
Mia stepped beside me, her presence reassuring.
"Everyone, Jamie here is actually an amazing DJ!"
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
She announced to the group.
Some of the girls looked at me skeptically, especially Adrianna who crossed her arms over her chest.
I took a deep breath, opening my mixing software on my laptop and hovering my finger over the play button.
I took a deep breath and pressed play, starting with a simple beat.
The girls watched me expectantly as I layered in some synthesizer chords.
My fingers moved across the controller, adjusting levels and adding more elements to the beat.
I cued up the vocal sample that I had recorded earlier, my own voice saying "I'll be here getting you warmed up."
As the beat dropped, I looped and manipulated the phrase, making it bounce between speakers.

Some of the girls started nodding their heads to the rhythm, even Adrianna's stern expression softened slightly.
Mia leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "You know, Adrianna's just tough on the outside," she said with a wink.
Adrianna caught the comment and smirked. "I heard that, Mia," she said, her tone playful.
I let the current track play through its chorus, giving me a brief window to step away from the equipment.
Moving to the edge of the dance circle, I started swaying to my own beats.
Sarah grabbed my hand, pulling me into the group of dancing girls.
The pulsing rhythm carried us as we jumped and moved together.
I glanced at my watch, knowing that in two minutes I needed to transition to the next track.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
I danced my way back over to my equipment, grabbing my microphone and capturing a quick vocal sample of myself saying "Mo-ving."
The crowd erupted as I layered the sample into the mix, and in that moment, I knew I'd turned skeptics into believers.
I layered another vocal sample into the mix, this time saying "Moving forward."
The girls danced around me, their movements casting shifting shadows in the patio lights.
My fingers moved smoothly across the controller, looping and fading between tracks with ease.
Katie, one of Mia's friends, approached me.
"Can you play my favorite song?"
She asked.
I nodded, recognizing the song she requested.
I worked its melody into the current beat, transitioning seamlessly between tracks.
Mia brought me a water bottle, and I took quick sips between transitions.
The party continued to pulse with energy as I maintained the groove.

Some of the girls took breaks on the pool chairs, while others kept dancing in the cool night air.
Sarah approached me again.
"Can we slow it down a bit?"
I nodded, reaching for the tempo knob on my controller.
I gradually brought the BPM down from 128 to 98, the pulsing dance beats morphing into smooth R&B rhythms.
I layered in some atmospheric synth pads to create a sensual atmosphere.
Sarah gave me an appreciative nod and sank into a nearby pool chair.
The other girls followed suit, grabbing their drinks and finding comfortable spots around the patio.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
Mia and Adrianna whispered by the pool's edge, occasionally glancing my way.
The party shifted from dancing to casual conversation, and I planned to keep it mellow for the next few tracks.
I faded out the last song and switched to my pre-mixed playlist on my laptop.
The mellow beats flowed through the speakers, creating a relaxed vibe.
I double-checked the volume levels, ensuring they were at a comfortable setting for conversation.
Satisfied, I stepped away from my equipment and headed to the kitchen to grab a drink.
Sarah waved me over to join her group lounging on the pool chairs.
I settled into an empty chair between her and Katie, feeling the warmth of the night air envelop me.
"Great job tonight," Sarah said, nodding toward my equipment.
"You're really talented."
"Thanks," I replied, smiling.
"I've been doing it for a while now. It's just something I enjoy."
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
Katie leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
"So, what got you into DJing?"
I leaned back in my lounge chair, a nostalgic smile spreading across my face.
"My first real gig was a disaster," I began, and both Sarah and Katie leaned in closer.
"It was my friend Mark's sixteenth birthday. He asked me to do the music for the party. I borrowed equipment from another friend, but I barely knew how to use it."
I chuckled at the memory.
"About halfway through the first song, I tripped over a cord and unplugged everything. The whole room went silent. Forty teenagers just standing there looking at me like I was an idiot."
Sarah let out a laugh, her eyes shining with amusement.
"Ouch," she said, reaching out to pat my arm sympathetically.
Mia and Adrianna had moved closer while we were talking, their faces lit by the soft glow of the patio lights.
They were still keeping a respectful distance, but I could tell they were curious about our conversation.
Katie leaned forward, her voice filled with excitement.

"What happened next?"
I leaned back in my lounge chair, building suspense before delivering the punchline.
Sarah and Katie waited expectantly, their faces illuminated by the soft pool lights.
I took a deep breath, recalling the mortifying moment.
"I looked around at all those blank faces and knew I had to do something. So, I grabbed the mic and said, 'I'm not a DJ, I'm an electrician! I've been hired to cut off your power!'"
As soon as the words left my mouth, Sarah burst into surprised laughter.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
Katie's eyes went wide, and she covered her mouth with her hand.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Mia trying to stifle a giggle.
Even Adrianna cracked a smile, her usually stoic expression softening for a moment.
The positive reaction encouraged me to continue.
I settled back into my lounge chair, ready to share the rest of the story.
"Well, I got a few more gigs after that," I began.
"But the real disaster was when I played at a local coffee shop. They wanted smooth jazz in the background while people ate their breakfast."
I shook my head, remembering how confident I'd been before that disastrous day.
"I'd practiced my set so many times, but when I got there, something went wrong. Instead of smooth jazz, I ended up playing death metal."
Sarah and Katie leaned forward, intrigued by the unexpected twist.
"The owner was furious," I continued.
"He stormed over to me and started yelling about how he was going to have to refund all his customers. The place emptied out in seconds. Elderly people were running for the door like they were in a war zone."
Mia pulled up a chair and joined our little group, her eyes shining with amusement.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
Adrianna drifted closer, pretending to adjust her towel as an excuse to listen in.
I gestured animatedly as I told the rest of the story.
"The owner was yelling at me, and I was trying to figure out what was wrong. I started pushing buttons on my controller, hoping one of them would fix it." "The music got louder and louder," I said, mimicking the actions with my hands.
"The owner looked like he was about to have a heart attack. He grabbed me by the arm and dragged me toward the door. 'You're killing my business!' he yelled. 'You're scaring away my customers!'"
Sarah let out another laugh, shaking her head in disbelief.
"That's so crazy," she said.
"I can't believe you went through all that."
I shrugged, smiling wryly.
"It was definitely a learning experience," I replied.
"But it made me realize how much I actually loved DJing. So, even though it didn't go well at first, it's something that's really important to me now."
As I finished speaking, Mia reached out and touched my arm lightly.
"I'm glad you stuck with it," she said softly.
"It's really cool that you have such a passion."
Adrianna nodded in agreement, her eyes shining with understanding.
"It's not every day you meet someone who's so dedicated to something they love," she said.
I smiled at them both, feeling grateful for their support.
"Thanks," I said sincerely.
Katie leaned in, her eyes full of newfound respect.
"Have you ever thought about going professional?" she asked, her voice tinged with excitement.
I hesitated for a moment, then nodded slowly.
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
"Actually, I've been considering it more seriously lately," I admitted.
"I played at a club downtown last month. It was a big step up for me, but it went really well."
I leaned back in my lounge chair, watching the pool lights shimmer on the water.
"Last month, I played at Club Vertex downtown," I began, catching Sarah and Katie's eager expressions.
Mia settled onto the edge of the chair beside me while Adrianna pretended to check her phone a few feet away.
"The night before the show, I got a call from the owner. He told me their sound system had completely fried. They were going to have to cancel unless I could bring my own equipment."
I paused for dramatic effect, and the girls leaned in closer.
"When I got there, I saw that he wasn't exaggerating. The whole system was fried. But I couldn't let him down. So, I MacGyvered something together using my basic equipment and some speakers I borrowed from a friend."
Adrianna moved closer now, no longer pretending to be disinterested.
"I hooked everything up to my phone's headphone jack," I continued.
"It wasn't perfect, but it worked well enough to get us through the night."
Swimming in a Sea of Girls
The girls all nodded, impressed by my resourcefulness.
"When the owner came over to thank me, he looked like he'd seen a ghost," I said with a chuckle.
