I am Mohamed Abdi.
I am 24 years old.
I am from Somalia, but I was born in America.
I have dark skin and tattoos all over my arms, abdomen, chest, and shoulders.
I have a muscular build and I am tall.
I got a new job today at Cloud 9 retail store as a sales associate.
I approach the break room and hear whispers about me.
I open the door and see everyone sitting at a table.
Amy says, "Everyone, this is Mohamed Abdi. He's our new sales associate."
A man in a wheelchair at the entry table nods his head at me and says, "Hi, I'm Garrett. Welcome to Cloud 9."
He looks at my tattoos for a while.
A lady with red hair says, "I'm Dina. Welcome to Cloud 9."
She looks at my tattoos for a while and then looks at my face.
She says, "You look like you work out."
I say, "Yeah, I do."
She says, "It shows. You're very muscular."
Superstore
I say, "Thanks."
A man with a beard says, "I'm Jonah. Welcome to Cloud 9."
He looks at my tattoos and says, "You look like you've been in prison before."
I say, "Nope, never been in prison before."
He says, "Well, you look like you have. You look like a criminal. You know what they say: 'Don't judge a book by its cover.'"
I laugh and say, "Yeah, I know what they mean by that."
A man with dark skin and a lady with blonde hair say nothing.
They just look at me and then look at each other.
A man with light skin and a funny voice says, "Hi Mohamed! I'm Glenn! Welcome to Cloud 9!"
He has a funny voice.
Superstore
He sounds like he's always laughing.
Garrett leans forward and asks, "So, Mohamed, what brings you to Cloud 9? You got any wild stories behind those tattoos?"
I hesitate for a moment before replying, "Let's just say they're reminders of a life I left behind."
Dina raises an eyebrow and says, "Well, whatever it is, you're here now. And we could use someone who's seen a thing or two."
I stand near the break room counter, my arms crossed as I shift my weight from one foot to the other.
I continue working the cashier, and I notice women and even underage girls looking at my tattoos.
They look at me flirtatiously.
They hand me their phone numbers.
I am not interested, so I give the numbers to Jonah and Garrett.
They are surprised that I am not interested.
Customers linger around to look at me longer, so they buy more items.
My sales go up.
Garrett says, "Are you crazy, Mohamed? They want you so bad!"
I say, "No, they want my body."
Cheyanne says, "Maybe you should give them a chance."
Superstore
I say, "No."
I shake my head and reply, "I'm not looking for anything right now, Cheyanne."
Jonah chimes in, "You know, sometimes the past can weigh you down more than you realize."
Garrett adds, "Yeah, man, maybe it's time to let go of some of that weight and see where life takes you."
During my break, I walk out to the empty loading dock.
I lean against the cold metal railing, staring at the crumpled pieces of paper in my hand.
The phone numbers of women who want more than I can give.
I sigh and look out into the night, wondering why I can't let go of the past.
Suddenly, I hear the sound of wheels on concrete.
I turn to see Garrett wheeling himself out onto the dock.
He parks his chair next to me and looks at me with a curious expression.
"Hey, Mohamed. Mind if I join you?"
I shake my head and gesture for him to sit down.
He rolls closer and looks at the papers in my hand.
Superstore
"Those from the ladies again?"
I nod and drop them into the trash can next to us.
Garrett leans back in his chair and looks at me with a serious expression.
"Listen, Mohamed. I don't mean to pry, but... why don't you want to date? You're a good-looking guy. You've got a lot going for you."
I sit down on the edge of the loading dock, and Garrett parks his chair next to me.
The crumpled phone numbers scatter around our feet.
I take a deep breath and start explaining, "My ex, Monica Hoang, cheated on me with my best friend, Patrick Andersen, two years ago."
I pause for a moment, letting the memories wash over me.
"Back then, I was overweight. So, I hit the gym hard. Training six hours a day, twice a day. I lost weight and gained muscle."
Superstore
I roll up my sleeve to show him the intricate tattoos that cover my arms.
"These are reminders of what I went through. Each one represents a song, movie, or celebrity that helped me get through those tough times."
Garrett nods silently, understanding in his eyes.
I return to the sales floor, my conversation with Garrett still fresh in my mind.
As I restock protein bars in aisle three, a middle-aged woman in tight yoga pants walks by.
She deliberately brushes against me, her eyes lingering on my arms.
"Excuse me," she says, "where can I find workout supplements?"
I point her in the direction of the fitness section and continue restocking.
Next, two teenage guys approach me.
They stare at the tattoo visible under the rolled-up sleeve of my uniform.
"Yo, bro," one of them says, "that's a sick tat. What's your workout routine?"
Before I can answer, Garrett's voice booms over the intercom.
"Attention shoppers! Flash sale on electronics! Everything must go!"
Superstore
I watch the crowd rush past, feeling a strange sense of calm amidst the chaos.
While restocking the cereal aisle with Amy and Cheyanne, I notice Amy's eyes constantly drifting to Jonah, who is at the end of the aisle.
He keeps finding excuses to walk by, pretending to help customers nearby.
I watch as he leans in close to Amy and whispers something in her ear.
She giggles, and he winks at her.
Cheyanne notices my confusion and leans in to whisper, "They've been like this forever."
I nod, understanding now.
Amy and Jonah are clearly interested in each other, but neither of them wants to admit it.
As we finish restocking the cereal aisle, Jonah walks over to us again.
"Hey Amy," he says with a smirk, "I heard Frosted Flakes are gr-r-reat for dating."
Amy laughs way too hard at his corny joke and playfully touches his arm.
Superstore
Jonah smiles back at her, his eyes shining with amusement.
Cheyanne rolls her eyes at me and whispers, "They're so cute together."
I smile and nod in agreement.
Just then, Glenn's voice crackles over the intercom.
"Attention employees! Cleanup needed in aisle three!"
Jonah groans and says, "Duty calls. See you later, ladies."
As he walks away, I notice Amy watching him go with a dreamy expression on her face.
Cheyanne nudges me and whispers, "She's got it bad for him."
I chuckle and reply, "Yeah, it's pretty obvious."
Cheyanne grins and says, "Maybe we should play matchmaker and give them a little push."
Superstore
Amy overhears us and turns bright red, stammering, "You guys better not be plotting anything!"
I help Mateo organize the shoe department, methodically arranging boxes by size and style.
As we work, he tells me about moving from the Philippines to the United States when he was ten years old.
He talks about the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and language, and how his family struggled to make ends meet.
Mateo also shares with me how hard it was for him to come out as gay to his traditional Filipino family.
His parents were shocked and upset at first, but eventually they came to accept him for who he is.
I listen intently, feeling a sense of empathy and understanding.
Growing up in a Somali household, I know how difficult it can be to navigate cultural expectations and family traditions.
Mateo notices my interest and asks if I have a similar experience.
I tell him about my own struggles growing up in a traditional Muslim household, where my parents expected me to follow certain rules and customs.
But I also share with him how my parents eventually came to accept me for who I am, just like his did. Mateo smiles and says, "It's nice to know that there are others out there who understand what I'm going through."
Superstore
I nod in agreement and say, "Yeah, it definitely helps to have someone who can relate."
We continue working on the shoe display, chatting occasionally about our lives and experiences.
As we finish up, Mateo thanks me for my help and says, "I really appreciate you being here for me. It means a lot."
I smile and say, "No problem. We're all in this together."
Just then, Marcus walks into the shoe department with a large stack of boxes in his arms.
He looks frazzled and frustrated as he sets down the boxes with a loud thud.
"Ugh," he groans, "this is ridiculous. I can't believe they messed up the delivery again."
Mateo rolls his eyes at Marcus's dramatic entrance but says nothing.
Marcus notices us watching him and says, "Sorry guys. I'm just really frustrated with this whole situation."
I offer to help Marcus sort out the delivery mix-up, but Mateo shakes his head and says, "No need. I'll take care of it."
Superstore
Marcus nods gratefully at Mateo and says, "Thanks man. I owe you one." As Mateo begins sorting through the boxes, Marcus turns to me and says, "You're new here right? Well come on then. Let's get this over with."
I trail behind Marcus as he leads me through the narrow back hallways of the store.
We pass by rows of shelves stacked with boxes and crates, the smell of cardboard and dust filling the air.
Marcus mutters to himself as we walk, his footsteps echoing off the concrete walls.
Finally, we arrive at a large metal door that leads to the stockroom.
Marcus pushes open the door and gestures for me to enter first.
Inside, I see a sea of boxes scattered across the floor.
Some are stacked haphazardly on top of each other, while others lie flat on the ground.
The room is dimly lit, with only a few flickering fluorescent lights illuminating the space.
Marcus sighs and says, "Welcome to our lovely stockroom. Isn't it just wonderful?"
I laugh at his sarcasm and say, "It's definitely... something."
Superstore
Marcus shakes his head and says, "Yeah well, this is what happens when you have a delivery truck drop off all your inventory at once. They just dump everything in here without any regard for organization or order."
I look around at the boxes and see that they contain a wide variety of items - athletic wear, kitchen appliances, baby clothes, garden tools, and more.
It's clear that they were all mixed together in no particular order. I turn to Marcus and say, "So what do you need me to do?"
He points to a stack of papers on a nearby desk and says, "Those are the manifests for today's delivery. I need you to go through them and make sure everything is accounted for."
I nod and begin sorting through the papers.
As I work, Marcus starts opening boxes and checking their contents against the manifests.
After a few minutes, I hear him curse under his breath.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
He looks up at me with a worried expression on his face and says, "Half of our inventory isn't listed on these manifests. And some of these boxes don't even have labels on them."
I frown and say, "That's strange. Do you think someone made a mistake when they loaded the truck?"
Superstore
Marcus shakes his head and says, "No way. This was done intentionally. Someone wanted to make it hard for us to keep track of our inventory."
I feel a surge of anger at whoever would do such a thing, but I try to stay calm and focus on finding a solution.
I finish restocking the last aisle of misplaced items from the delivery mix-up.
My muscles ache and my mind is foggy from the long shift.
The fluorescent lights overhead dim slightly, signaling that it's closing time.
Glenn's voice crackles over the intercom, "Attention employees, please report to the break room for closing procedures."
I head towards the break room, peeling off my sweaty Cloud 9 shirt as I go.
Underneath, I'm wearing a black tank top that reveals my tattooed torso.
Amy and Cheyanne are already in the break room, chatting quietly about Jonah.
They pause mid-conversation when they see me, their eyes widening at the sight of my inked skin.
Marcus walks in behind me and snickers, "Damn boy, you must work out every day."
I laugh and shake my head, "Nah man, I just have good genes."
Superstore
We all clock out and head towards the front of the store together.
The parking lot is empty except for a few cars scattered here and there.
Our footsteps echo off the buildings as we walk towards our vehicles.
Garrett whistles lowly when he sees my car - a restored '69 Mustang with glossy black paint and chrome wheels.
"Nice ride," he says with a grin. I unlock the door and slide into the driver's seat, starting up the engine with a loud rumble.
Superstore
I pull out of the parking lot and onto the street, following the familiar route home.
The Mustang's engine purrs smoothly as I drive, the wind blowing through my hair.
I turn into my driveway and park underneath the streetlight, killing the engine and listening to it sputter before falling silent.
The house sits dark and empty - just how I left it this morning.
I get out of the car and lock the doors, double-checking to make sure they're secure.
Superstore
Then I trudge up the concrete path to the front door, keys jingling in my hand.
Inside, I flip on the kitchen light and see that everything is just as I left it this morning - clean counters, empty sink, no dirty dishes.
I open the cabinet above the fridge and pull out a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniel's. The amber liquid splashes into a glass as I pour myself a shot.
Standing at my kitchen counter, I take measured sips of the whiskey, letting each one linger on my tongue before swallowing.
The amber liquid catches the dim light from above the stove as I tilt the glass.
My phone buzzes with a text from Garrett - "Hey man, just wanted to check in and make sure you're doing okay after our talk."
I set the glass down without finishing it, remembering how alcohol became Patrick's excuse for everything.
Instead of pouring another shot, I head out to my home gym in the garage.
The familiar scent of rubber and metal fills my nostrils as I step inside.
I start with the weights, pushing myself to my limits for two hours straight.
Sweat soaks through my tank top and drips down my face as I lift and rep, the burn in my muscles a reminder of how far I've come.
When I finally stop, my body is trembling with exhaustion.
I peel off my shirt and toss it aside before stepping into the cold shower.
Superstore
The icy water shocks my system at first, but then numbs the soreness in my muscles.
I stand under the spray for several minutes, feeling every inch of my body come alive again.
When I get out, my skin is pink and tingling.
I dry off with a towel and pull on a pair of sweatpants before heading back inside.
The house feels less empty now that I have a purpose for the day.
I make myself a protein shake and drink it down quickly, then scramble some eggs in a pan.
The smell of hot food fills the kitchen as I eat, savoring every bite.
After breakfast, I head back to my room to grab a quick shower before work.
The water feels good against my sore muscles as I wash away the sweat from last night's workout.
When I get out, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead.
I pull on my Cloud 9 uniform and head out the door, locking it behind me.
The drive to work is uneventful, but I enjoy the quiet time alone in my car.
Superstore
When I arrive at the store, I park next to Garrett's modified van. The parking lot is almost empty except for a few other employees who have arrived early like me.
I walk inside and clock in before heading to the locker room to change into my work shirt.
Amy and Jonah are already there, whispering jokes back and forth by their lockers.
They glance up when they see me come in, but quickly return to their conversation.
I ignore them and focus on getting ready for my shift.
When I'm done changing, I head out to the break room where everyone else has gathered for our morning briefing.
Glenn stands at the front of the room with Dina by his side, holding papers in his hand as he waves them around excitedly.
Cheyanne and Garrett are sitting together at one of the tables, so I take an empty seat next to them. "Good morning everyone," Glenn says with a smile that stretches across his face from ear to ear.
"I hope you're all doing well today."
He looks around the room with enthusiasm, clearly excited about whatever he has planned for us this morning.
Superstore
"First off, I just want to remind everyone that customer service is key," Glenn says, holding up his clipboard and pointing at it.
"This is what we're all about here at Cloud 9. We need to make sure our customers feel welcome and taken care of every time they come into the store."
He looks around the room again, making eye contact with each of us as he speaks.
"And I know we can do that. I believe in all of you."
He smiles again, his teeth gleaming white against his tanned skin.
"Now, let's go over today's assignments."
He pulls out a sheet of paper from the stack in his hand and begins reading from it.
"Jonah, you'll be working at the front register today. Amy, you'll be helping out in the electronics department. And Dina, you'll be working at the customer service desk."
He looks up from the paper and smiles once more before continuing.
"And as for me, I'll be walking around the store making sure everything is running smoothly."
Superstore
He puts down the papers and crosses his arms over his chest.
"Alright everyone, let's get started!"
Glenn says with a grin.
"I want to see those smiles on your faces when you're interacting with customers. Remember, customer service is key!"
He turns to Dina and motions for her to follow him.
"Let's go practice our customer service skills," he says with a wink. Dina rolls her eyes but follows Glenn anyway.
As they walk away from us, Amy leans over and whispers something to Jonah that makes him laugh.
I watch them for a moment before standing up and heading out to the electronics department.
I grab my cart of items to restock and start putting them away on the shelves.
A few minutes later, a customer comes up to me looking confused.
"Excuse me," he says with a smile on his face.
"I'm looking for some new headphones. Can you show me where they are?"
I nod and point down an aisle nearby.
"They're just over there," I say with a friendly smile on my face.
"But if you need any help finding anything else, feel free to ask."
The man thanks me and walks off towards the headphones section.
I watch him go before returning to my work restocking the shelves. A few minutes later, another customer approaches me with a question about a TV they were looking at.
I answer their question politely and then ask if there's anything else I can help them find in the store.
As the customer walks away, Garrett sidles up next to me with a curious look.
"Hey, did you hear about the new manager they're bringing in?" he asks, glancing around to make sure no one else is listening.
Superstore
"No, what's up with that?" I reply, intrigued by the sudden change.
He leans in closer, lowering his voice even more.
"I heard she used to work at another Cloud 9 location. She's really strict and has a reputation for firing people who don't meet her standards."
He glances around the store again, making sure no one is listening.
"I heard she even fired an entire department once because they were two minutes late to a morning meeting."
I nod, taking in this information.
"That sounds pretty intense," I say.
"Yeah, I know. It's kind of scary to think about. But hey, at least we'll have some new blood around here, right?"
He smiles and nods before turning to leave.
As he walks away, I notice Dina standing behind a display of TVs, pretending to organize the merchandise but actually watching us with a curious expression on her face.
I turn back to my work, trying not to let her see me staring at her.
Superstore
A few minutes later, Garrett rolls up next to me in his wheelchair.
"Hey man, how's it going?" he asks, giving me a friendly smile.
"Good," I reply, nodding towards Dina.
"Did you hear about the new manager?"
Garrett follows my gaze and sees Dina watching us from behind the display.
"Oh yeah," he says quietly.
"I heard she's pretty tough too. But hey, at least we'll have someone new to talk to around here, right?"
He chuckles and shakes his head before continuing.
"So what do you think about these new TVs? Do you think they're worth the money?"
I shrug and look down at the floor.
"I don't know much about electronics," I admit. "Well, let me tell you something," Garrett says with a grin.
"These TVs are top-of-the-line. They have all sorts of features like 4K resolution and HDR. And they're really affordable too."
He points to one of the TVs on display and says, "This one here is only $500. That's a steal if you ask me."
I nod and look up at the TV he's pointing at.
"Yeah, that does sound like a good deal," I say.
Superstore
"But I'm not sure if I need all those extra features. I just want something simple that will play my games and watch movies."
Garrett nods and smiles again.
"Well, then this might be the perfect TV for you," he says.
"It has all the basics and it's really easy to use. Plus it's only $300."
