One of the craziest days of my life started with my two best friends, Mason and Hayden, and our trusty dog Charlie.
We were bored and wanted something exciting to happen, so we went exploring.
We lived in a small town where there wasn’t much to do, but we found an old church on the outskirts of town that none of us had been in before.
We snuck in and looked around, and everything seemed pretty normal, except for one thing.
On the floor, in the corner, was a bottle.
I picked it up, and we examined it.
There were no labels on it, but there was something inside.
We shook it up and looked closely, but we couldn’t tell what it was.
Mason thought it might be a gene of some sort.
His dad was a biologist, and he had told Mason about genes before.
If it was a gene, what kind of gene could be just floating around?
We decided to take the bottle home and try to figure it out.
Once we got to my house, we put the bottle on the kitchen counter and started researching genes on the computer.
After a few minutes, I got up to get a snack from the cupboard and accidentally knocked the bottle off the counter.
It hit the floor and broke into a hundred pieces.
I looked down and saw that the gene had come out.
I froze in shock.
The gene was no longer trapped inside the glass.
It was free, and it was glowing.
It had a soft blue light around it, and it was hovering in the air at eye level.
Mason and Hayden came over and stood on either side of me, their shoulders touching mine.
We all stared at the gene, unsure of what to do.
Charlie, who had been quietly sitting in the corner, suddenly whimpered and backed away from us.
She ran under the kitchen table and hid.
I don’t know why, but I felt like something was about to happen.
I could feel it in my bones.
And then it did.
The gene spoke to us.
It said, "What year is this? What time?"
Its voice was clear and crisp, but also a little raspy.
It sounded old and wise at the same time.
We all looked at each other in shock.
I opened my mouth to speak, but I couldn’t form any words. My hands were shaking as I reached for the microwave clock behind me to see what the date was.
The glowing gene hovers at eye level in my kitchen, its blue light making the familiar room feel alien and strange.
My fingers grip the kitchen counter as I watch the gene pulse brighter with each word.
Mason steps back, bumping into the refrigerator, while Hayden moves closer, squinting at the floating light.
Charlie continues whimpering under the table, his tail tucked between his legs.
The gene's raspy voice grows louder, echoing off the tile floor and walls.
"2023?" it repeats, stretching into a long, drawn-out whisper.
The blue glow suddenly expands, filling the entire kitchen with intense light.
And then, just as quickly as it appeared, the light vanished, leaving us in stunned silence.
I grip the kitchen counter, my heart racing in my chest as the deep voice echoes through the room again.
"I am a gene. You have freed me. You will each get one wish."
The gene is no longer visible, but it's still here, filling the room with an electric energy that makes my skin tingle.
Mason is the first to move, stepping forward and clearing his throat.
"I-I want to fly," he says, his voice shaking with excitement.
Hayden follows, his voice almost a shout.
"I want to be super strong!"
I remain silent, trying to think of what I could possibly wish for.
Charlie peeks out from under the table, her tail wagging tentatively as she sniffs the air.
The kitchen feels charged with energy, like static before a storm.
When the gene speaks again, its voice is clear and commanding.
"Last one?"
I clear my throat and speak clearly, my voice steady despite the turmoil in my mind.
"I want to teleport."
As soon as the words leave my lips, the air around us crackles and shimmers.
"I wish to understand everything."
The kitchen starts to warp and twist, making me grab the counter to stay upright.
Mason stumbles backward, bumping into the wall, while Hayden drops to one knee.
Blue light pulses through my veins like electricity, and I watch as Mason's feet lift slightly off the ground.
Hayden's muscles ripple and grow beneath his t-shirt.
My own body feels like it's being pulled in different directions, atoms stretching apart.
Charlie barks frantically, running circles around us as the gene's glow intensifies.
The room continues spinning faster and faster until I can't tell up from down.
The violent spinning finally slows to a stop, and I stumble against the kitchen counter to steady myself.
My stomach lurches as the intense blue light from the gene blinks out, plunging the kitchen into darkness.
Mason crashes to the floor with a thud, while Hayden bumps into the refrigerator, making it rattle.
Charlie's anxious panting echoes in the dim room as my eyes struggle to adjust.
Through the window, I can see that the sun has set, leaving only faint streetlight filtering in.
I fumble along the wall, my fingers searching for the light switch.
My legs still feel wobbly from whatever just happened, and I bump into a chair.
Finally finding the switch, I flick it on.
The sudden brightness makes us all squint.
Mason is sprawled on the floor, his clothes wrinkled and his hair disheveled.
Hayden stands by the dented fridge, his t-shirt stretched tight across his newly muscular frame.
Charlie emerges from under the table, her tail wagging hesitantly as she sniffs the air.
We stare at each other in stunned silence, taking in our changed appearances.
And in that moment, I realize the world is no longer the same.
I watch Mason and Hayden gather their things in silence.
We're all still trying to process what just happened.
Mason's feet hover slightly off the ground as he tries to walk normally to the door, while Hayden accidentally crushes my doorknob in his grip.
Charlie follows them to the entrance, her tail low and uncertain.
Neither of my friends says a word - they just exchange meaningful looks with me before stepping out into the dark street.
From my kitchen window, I see Mason stumble into flight for a brief moment before catching himself.
"Did you feel that too?" Mason asks, his voice shaky as he hovers just above the ground.
"Yeah," Hayden replies, glancing down at his hands, "but I think it's more than just feeling—it's changing us."
I nod slowly, the weight of his words sinking in.
I lean against my front door frame, watching Mason hover uncertainly near my porch steps while Hayden paces the walkway, leaving small cracks in the concrete with each heavy step.
The streetlights cast long shadows across their unfamiliar forms.
Charlie sits alert at my feet, her ears perked up at every unusual movement.
My stomach churns with a mix of excitement and fear as I consider the responsibility of these powers.
"Meet me in my backyard tomorrow morning," I say, my voice steadier than I feel.
"We need to figure out how to control these abilities before someone gets hurt."
I close my front door and lean heavily against it, watching through the window as Mason drifts awkwardly down my driveway.
He keeps overcorrecting, bobbing up and down like a balloon in the wind.
Hayden walks beside him, one hand hovering near Mason's jacket to steady him if needed.
Their silhouettes grow smaller under the streetlights until they turn the corner at the end of my block.
Charlie whines at my feet, and I reach down to scratch behind her ears.
My hand trembles slightly as I touch her fur, still feeling aftershocks from the transformation.
I close the curtain and head upstairs to my bedroom, my legs still shaking with the aftermath.
Charlie follows closely behind, her nails clicking against the wooden steps.
Standing in the middle of my room, I take several deep breaths and focus on my desk chair across the room.
My skin tingles as I concentrate, trying to will myself there.
Nothing happens at first, but then my vision blurs and my stomach lurches.
Suddenly, I'm stumbling forward into my desk, knocking over a cup of pens.
I grip the edge of my desk to stop the dizziness while scattered pens roll across the floor.
Charlie sniffs at them curiously as I kneel down, my hands still trembling from the teleportation.
One by one, I collect the blue and black pens, trying to ignore how the room keeps spinning.
The metal cup feels cold against my clammy palm as I place it back on the desk.
When I drop the last pen in, it clinks loudly against the others, making me jump.
I lower myself onto my bed, taking slow breaths to calm my racing heart.
Charlie settles at my feet, watching me with big brown eyes.
This time, I picture the chair more clearly in my mind - the blue fabric, the small tear on the armrest, and the way it squeaks when it spins.
My skin begins to tingle again, but instead of rushing the process, I concentrate on maintaining the image.
The familiar pulling sensation starts in my stomach, gentler this time.
The air around me shifts and crackles with energy.
Just as I think I've got it under control, my body lurches forward, and I materialize halfway through the chair.
"Whoa, easy there, you're getting better," Hayden's voice crackles through the air as he steps into the room, eyes wide with concern.
"I thought I had it that time," I mutter, disentangling myself from the chair's armrest, my cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
"You're pushing too hard," he replies gently, crouching down to help me up, "but at least now we know why Mason's been acting so strange."
