"Happy birthday, Katherine," Miguel says as he hands me a cupcake with a lit candle in the center.
The sun is setting over the ocean, and my friends are all gathered around me on the beach.
Maddy, Mason, Brady, and Jacob are all here to celebrate my sixteenth birthday with me.
I blow out the candle and make a wish.
I can’t tell you what I wished for, or it won’t come true.
But I can tell you that I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen anyway.
Miguel takes a step back and watches me as I take a bite of the cupcake.
It’s delicious, and I’m pretty sure he made them himself.
He’s been acting weird all day, but I can’t figure out why.
I savor the sweetness of the cupcake, letting the rich vanilla flavor melt on my tongue.
"These are amazing, Miguel," I say, giving him a grateful smile.
He nods, but his eyes dart away quickly, avoiding my gaze.
Maddy's voice breaks through the moment, bubbling with excitement.
"So, Katherine, any big plans for the summer?" she asks, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
I shrug, trying to keep things light.
"Not really. Just hanging out with you guys and maybe hitting the beach a lot."
Mason and Brady are already tossing a frisbee back and forth, their laughter echoing across the sand.
"Hey, catch this one!" Mason shouts as he hurls the frisbee towards Brady with a bit too much force.
Brady leaps to catch it but misses, tumbling into the sand with a loud thud.
We all burst into laughter as Brady stands up, brushing sand off his clothes.
Jacob sits quietly on a driftwood log, staring at the horizon where the sun dips into the ocean.
His silence is comforting in its own way; he's always been the quiet one in our group.
"Let's play a game," Maddy suggests suddenly, clapping her hands together. "How about truth or dare?"
Everyone agrees enthusiastically, forming a circle around the small bonfire we had built earlier.
Miguel sits next to me, his leg brushing against mine.
I can feel his nervous energy radiating off him like heat from the flames.
"I'll go first," Maddy declares. "Katherine, truth or dare?"
"Dare," I reply without hesitation.
Maddy's eyes gleam mischievously as she thinks for a moment.
"I dare you to run into the ocean fully clothed!"
I laugh and stand up, kicking off my shoes before sprinting towards the water.
The cold waves crash against my legs as I wade in up to my waist before running back to the group, dripping wet but exhilarated.
"Your turn," I say breathlessly as I plop back down next to Miguel.
The game continues with light-hearted dares and truths until it's Miguel's turn.
"Truth or dare?" Brady asks him with a grin.
Miguel hesitates for a moment before answering. "Truth."
Brady leans forward slightly. "Why have you been acting so weird today?"
The question hangs in the air like an unwelcome guest.
Miguel's face pales as he looks down at his hands clasped tightly in his lap.
"I'm... I'm moving away at the end of summer," he finally says, his voice barely above a whisper.
The words hit me like a punch to the gut.
My heart sinks and I feel like I can't breathe for a moment.
The atmosphere shifts instantly from celebratory to tense and uncertain.
