I’m a good-looking guy, I know this—my reflection in the mirror tells me so.
My body’s fit and muscular from regular exercise, my features are chiseled and symmetrical, and my eyes are a deep, rich shade of blue that women often comment on.
I have no idea why they feel the need to tell me this, but I guess it’s a compliment of sorts.
I’m aware that my appeal is one of my tools, one that I use to my advantage when I need to get close to someone.
And my job requires me to get close to people often.
Very often.
Sometimes for reasons I don’t quite understand until much later on.
Sometimes for reasons I’d rather not think about at all.
My organization is a powerful one, and the work we do is essential to the safety of our country.
At least that’s what they tell us.
I’ve been an operative for years now, and I’ve seen many things, learned many things, and done many things that I can’t ever speak of or even think about.
Rachel helps me get ready for my resort look, and I’m grateful for her expertise.
She’s been with the organization for a long time, and she knows how to create a character.
She picks out three silver hoops of varying sizes for my left ear and a temporary tribal tattoo that curves from my right shoulder down to my bicep.
For the pool scene, she selects dark blue swim shorts that hit just above the knee, showing off my muscular legs.
I’ll go shirtless, of course, so I can show off the nipple piercing and tattoo.
Leather sandals that can be easily slipped on and off complete the look.
I have to remove the earrings while I’m swimming, but I can wear them to the evening events with linen shirts and fitted khaki shorts.
For dinner, we switch to boat shoes and add a simple leather bracelet around my right wrist.
I head to my room and make the necessary adjustments in front of the mirror.
I practice lifting my arm so the tattoo is visible, flexing my pecs just enough to draw attention to the nipple ring without being too obvious.
"Do you ever wonder why they chose you for this mission?" Rachel asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Sometimes," I replied, adjusting the bracelet, "but then I remember it’s not my place to question their decisions."
"Well, maybe you should," she said, meeting my eyes in the mirror, "because this time, it's personal."
Rachel hands me a pair of leather sandals.
"These will complete your look," she explains.
"They're casual enough for the beach and will protect your feet from the scorching sand."
I take the sandals from her and slip them on.
They feel strange after years of wearing tactical boots, but I adjust the straps and nod in satisfaction.
"Walk for me," she instructs, and I do as she asks.
"Relax your shoulders," she says, critiquing my stance.
"You’re on vacation. You shouldn’t be walking like a soldier."
I try again, forcing myself to adopt a more relaxed gait.
Rachel shakes her head.
"No, no, no. You need to swagger a little. You’re a husband on vacation with his wife. You should be enjoying yourself."
She demonstrates what she means, walking across the room with a slight swagger in her step.
I watch her carefully and then try it again.
This time, Rachel nods in approval.
"That’s better," she says, "but remember to smile more. You don’t want to look like you’re on a mission."
I check my reflection in the mirror and see a carefree tourist looking back at me.
But when I turn to leave, my jaw is still tight.
Rachel notices it immediately.
