Emily
She is a high school student with a passion for art. She is nervous, witty, and artistic. Emily finds herself trapped in the closet with Alex during the school lockdown. She tries to make light of the situation with humor, revealing her nervousness and creativity. Her presence surprises Alex, and they both share a meaningful moment, exploring their feelings and thoughts as they navigate the tense situation together.
This is not how I envisioned spending time with my crush.
And, honestly, if I had to choose someone to be stuck with during a school lockdown, I would have picked Emily.
I just never thought I’d be the one to make that happen.
"Okay, so … this is awkward," Emily says.
I laugh, trying to play it cool, even though my insides are currently writhing like a ball of snakes.
"I guess you could say that."
We both stand in the middle of the closet, facing each other, neither of us sure what to do.
The door behind us has a sign that reads janitor’s closet (authorized personnel only) and has a keycard reader on the handle.
Neither of us has a key, which is why we’re trapped here.
"Well, at least we have each other for company," she says.
I smile at her, but she looks more nervous than amused.
"This isn’t exactly how I envisioned spending time with you," I say.
Her eyes widen in horror.
"Oh no. Did you just admit to having feelings for me?"
I laugh again, hoping to recover from my mistake.
"Uh. No. Of course not."
But it’s too late; she’s already caught on and now she’s trying not to laugh.
"Alex," she says softly.
"Um … yeah. I have feelings for you."
I shift my weight between my feet, watching her process this information.
The fluorescent light above us flickers, casting strange shadows on her face.
My hands are sweating, and I wipe them on my jeans.
Emily fidgets with the bracelet on her wrist, a nervous habit I’ve noticed before in art class.
She’s always playing with it when she thinks no one is looking.
The silence stretches out between us until it becomes unbearable.
I clear my throat, gathering up the last of my courage.
"Emily," I start, my voice cracking slightly.
"I’ve been thinking …"
She looks up at me, her eyes meeting mine.
"Maybe we could …"
I pause, swallowing hard.
"Would you want things to be different between us?"
The words come out barely above a whisper.
She takes a deep breath, nodding slowly, and the tension in the room shifts.
The cramped closet feels even smaller as her nod hangs in the air between us.
My heart pounds against my ribs while I watch her fingers twist the silver bracelet around her wrist one final time before letting it rest.
The silence stretches out again, but this time it’s different.
We both stare at the floor, neither of us wanting to break the fragile moment that has settled over us.
A distant announcement echoes through the halls - something about maintaining positions - but I barely register it.
I shift my weight, accidentally knocking over a mop that had been leaning against the wall.
It clatters loudly on the floor, and I lunge to catch it before it makes any more noise.
In the process, I bump into Emily, and she lets out a small laugh.
