I Amber Dysart was asleep in a cabin, unaware it belonged to Captain James Hook and I was on his ship, asleep in his cabin, thank god he had two beds and I was asleep on one of them.
I was flying.
At least that’s what it felt like.
I was flying through a dark stormy night, the wind whipping through my hair, stars streaking past me.
I was weightless, free.
I wasn’t dreaming, I was asleep in a bed, but I felt more alive than I had in years.
I could feel the wind rushing past me, cool and refreshing after the oppressive heat of the day.
I could see the stars above me, cool and refreshing after the oppressive heat of the day.
I could see the stars above me, twinkling like diamonds against the dark velvet of the sky.
I felt alive.
Then I wasn’t.
I fell through a wall of darkness, into nothingness.
I tried to scream, my lungs burning with the effort, but no sound came out.
It was like being suffocated, except instead of being smothered by some external force, I was being smothered by my own body.
I awoke with a start, gasping for air, the remnants of the nightmare clinging to my mind like a damp shroud.
The cabin was dimly lit by a flickering lantern, casting shadows that danced across the wooden walls like restless spirits.
I sat up slowly, taking in my unfamiliar surroundings, my eyes scanning the room as if searching for an escape route.
The gentle creaking of the ship and the distant sound of waves reminded me of my predicament, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.
Across the room, Captain Hook lay asleep, his hook resting on a small table beside him, its metal glinting in the faint light.
I watched him warily, aware of his reputation as a ruthless pirate, my heart racing with every beat.
Smee entered quietly, glancing at me with a mix of curiosity and caution, his eyes darting between me and his captain.
He cleared his throat, a nervous sound, and approached me slowly, his hands held out in a placating gesture.
"Miss Dysart," he said softly, "are you... quite all right?"
I nodded slowly, still trying to catch my breath, my mind reeling with questions.
How did I get here? What did they want with me?
Smee's eyes flicked to Captain Hook, then back to me, and I sensed a warning in his gaze.
"Perhaps you should... rest some more," he suggested, his voice laced with uncertainty.
But I shook my head, determination rising within me.
"I need to know what's going on," I said firmly, my voice barely above a whisper.
Smee hesitated, glancing at Captain Hook again, before nodding reluctantly.
"Very well," he said. "But be warned, Miss Dysart... you may not like what you hear."
Suddenly, the ship lurched violently, throwing us all off balance.
I stumbled forward, Smee grabbing my arm to steady me, as Captain Hook sat up with a growl.
"What's happening?" I cried out, panic rising in my chest.
"The Kraken!" someone shouted from outside the cabin. "It's attacking the ship!"
The ship swayed violently, and I clutched the bedpost to steady myself, my knuckles white with tension.
Smee rushed in, his face pale with fear, his eyes darting to the door as if searching for an escape route.
"The Kraken's real," he stammered, his voice trembling.
Captain Hook stirred, his expression shifting from sleep to sharp alertness in an instant.
He barked orders, his voice cutting through the chaos like a whip, sending Smee scurrying to obey.
I scrambled to my feet, heart pounding as the ship groaned under the creature's assault, the wooden hull creaking ominously.
Smee grabbed my arm, pulling me towards the cabin door with a desperate urgency.
"Stay close," he urged, glancing nervously at Hook who was already striding out to confront the beast.
I followed, adrenaline coursing through me like liquid fire, my senses heightened as I took in the sounds of panic and chaos outside.
The air was thick with the smell of saltwater and fear, and I could feel the weight of the Kraken's presence bearing down on us.
As we burst out of the cabin, I caught a glimpse of the creature's massive tentacles wrapping around the ship's hull, its suckers leaving deep gashes in the wood.
Captain Hook stood at the rail, his hook flashing in the moonlight as he bellowed orders at his crew.
Smee pulled me closer, shielding me from the chaos as the crew scrambled to defend against the monster's attack.
I felt a jolt of fear as a tentacle slammed into the ship's side, sending us stumbling backwards.
Smee's grip on my arm tightened as he pulled me towards the stairs leading up to the deck.
